In her recently published study, Madyson McRay explores how young adult novels can help students navigate questions of race, identity, and belonging while fostering deeper engagement with learning. By examining four YA books featuring diverse characters, the research highlights how representation in classroom texts can promote inclusion, empathy, and meaningful discussion. Students seeing themselves represented in literature supports belonging and self-worth.

What happens when faculty from across Virginia gather to share experience and research regarding global education? Over the past two years, the Virginia Faculty of Comparative Education (VA-FACE) Summits have created a space for dialogue, support, collaboration, and shared commitment for faculty from James Madison University, William & Mary and George Mason University. Most recently, the 4th Summit was held at George Mason University in September. Grateful for this growing network and the related emergent scholarly projects (podcasts, journal special edition, potential grants and possible co-edited book)!

How do future science teachers picture great teaching? Science teaching has evolved, and the tools we use to prepare future educators should evolve too.

The latest research from Dr. Angela Webb and Dr. Joi Merritt, as well as colleagues from Coastal Carolina University, updates the long-standing Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist to better reflect today’s vision of ambitious, student-centered science teaching. The new, validated rubric helps teacher educators and future teachers better understand and explore teaching beliefs, trace changes in beliefs, and support the development of high-quality science teaching. By providing a clearer picture of how teacher candidates view effective teaching, this updated tool offers a practical resource for preparing the next generation of exceptional science educators.

Students in LED 300, in conjunction with their professor, Bobbie Jo Kite, held a literacy night at Elkton Elementary, which was attended by over 100 students and their families. Students enjoyed participating in the engaging activities that the LED 300 students created for the evening. Such a fun night of literacy for all!

As we conclude the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commemoration events, join the Madison Center for Civic Engagement for a roundtable that asks us to consider the stories we tell about the First Peoples of western Virginia, their roles in the Backcountry, and their resilience today. The Great Valley Road (Route 11), the Native American route that runs through JMU’s campus, is the anchor for the discussion. Generations of students went out from here to teach Virginia history at a time when Native Americans were viewed as a people of the past. The roundtable will grow our understandings of connections between past and present by building a more inclusive dialogue.
