Sherise Truman ’18 MSW will receive the Council on Social Work Education’s (CSWE) Partners in International Education (PIE) Student award at the CSWE Annual Program Meeting in Florida. As an intern for Dr. Rebecca Thomas, Sherise was involved in several International Center projects and qualitative research teams interviewing Karen refugees in the Hartford community and Syrian refugees in Armenia. She is being recognized for her programmatic innovations and contributions to the body of international education while a student at the School of Social Work.

In nominating Sherise, Dr. Rebecca Thomas, director of the Center for International Social Work Studies, described Sherise as having a strong work ethic and commitment to human rights and social justice. “She is passionate about working with immigrants, especially refugees. She is an advocate for first generation college bound students and has demonstrated outstanding contributions to the field of international social work education,” stated Dr. Thomas. As an MSW student, Sherise worked hard to educate the school community on issues of immigration and migration with a focus on DACA students.
