Join us in welcoming Dr. Chanee Fabius, a nationally recognized gerontologist and health services researcher, who joined the UConn School of Social Work this fall as the Judith M. Zachs Family Professor in Aging and associate professor! Dr. Fabius comes to UConn from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

A principal investigator on multiple National Institute on Aging awards, Dr. Fabius will teach and mentor students while expanding collaborative research partnerships across the UConn School of Social Work, the Center on Aging, and other University programs. Her work examines how research evidence can translate into policies and practices that enable older adults, family caregivers, and direct care workers to thrive.

A research article written by four co-authors, is published in the Aug. 22 issue of Women’s Reproductive Health.

In a U.S. sociopolitical climate in which q***r, trans, and disabled people are under attack, arts-based speculative practices offer tools for envisioning just worlds. Titled “Imagining Q***r and Trans Disabled Futures: Arts-Based Practices of Q***rCrip Futurity in a Hostile Sociopolitical Climate,” co-authors Spencer Evans, graduate assistant and Ph.D. student; Quinn Meehan ’26 MSW (SSW); Meg Paceley, associate professor and associate dean for academic affairs; and Kelsi Carolan, assistant professor; analyzed the artwork of q***r and trans disabled people who were invited to illustrate how they imagined a better future.

The researchers identified themes in the artwork including including freedom, safety; refusal, reclamation; and ecological flourishing.

Professor Cristina Mogro-Wilson is the co-author “Navigating Fatherhood: How Intersectional Forces and Systemic Pressures Reshape the Family,” published August 4 in Families in Society.

The editorial calls for a sustained and adequately resourced fatherhood research agenda—one that challenges harmful stereotypes and recognizes the legal, economic, and social barriers that can limit fathers’ involvement in their children’s lives. It also highlights fathers’ resilience and the need for research, policy, and interventions informed by racial socialization, cultural identity, and more inclusive measures of fatherhood.

"Children with nurturing, engaged fathers demonstrate stronger cognitive development, higher academic achievement, greater emotional regulation, and better long-term social outcomes than those without consistent paternal presence," Dr. Mogro-Wilson says.

UConn School of Social Work and UConn Hartford undergraduate students now have the opportunity to live in downtown Hartford at the new Pratt Street Residence Hall.

With four floors and a central atrium, the apartment-style living space includes student-centric spots including classrooms, lounges, a fitness area, and gathering space in central atrium.

“This investment in our students is also an investment in Hartford’s future," says President Radenka Maric. "Together we are helping to create a more vibrant, dynamic downtown where students can live, learn, and contribute to the city’s growth."
