National History

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 13, 1913 by 22 enlightened, dynamic college women who represented the epitome of sisterhood, scholarship and service. The first public act performed by the Delta Founders involved their participation in the Women's Suffrage March in Washington D.C., March 1913. The Hartford Alumnae

Chapter

In May 1947, 13 visionary women came together to charter the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Today the active membership of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter includes more than 100 professional women in the fields of education, government, corporate America, and the nonprofit sector. For more than 60 years, our chapter has been a driving force in the Hartford community with a purpose to provide services and programs that promote human welfare. We continue to be dedicated to the mission and vision of the Sorority’s Founders by contributing countless hours of public service and outreach programs in the areas of Educational Development, Economic Development, Physical and Mental Health, Political Awareness and Involvement and International Awareness and Involvement. Some of our signature service projects include the Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy/Delta G.E.M.S. Preparatory Program and Habitat for Humanity. Another signature program of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter is our Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Proceeds from the breakfast enable the chapter to award renewable scholarships to talented African American female high school seniors from the Greater Hartford area. With support from corporate and community sponsors we have been able to award more than $150,000 in scholarships since 1985.

Members of the Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and the Tau Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. participated in the inaugural Take Back Your Health Hartford: Healthier Men, Stronger Community Men's Health & Wellness Event this past weekend.

The event included a day of health screenings, wellness resources, food, music, and community resources designed to help men live healthier, more robust lives. The two chapters came together to register voters and disseminate vital information on accessing healthcare.

TONIGHT: On behalf of the Hartford Votes~Hartford Vota Coalition, The Village for Families & Children, Inc., The Hartford Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and the Hartford Public Library, we are pleased to invite you to participate in Dessert & Dialogue, a nonpartisan community forum bringing together voters and candidates ahead of Connecticut's 2026 Primary & General Elections.

Dessert & Dialogue is designed to give Hartford-area residents the opportunity to meet congressional and state candidates, hear directly about the issues that matter most, and engage in respectful, meaningful conversations in an informal community setting. Our goal is to help voters make informed decisions while strengthening civic engagement and connections between candidates and the communities they seek to represent.

The event will take place on Tuesday, July 21st, from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM at Hartford Public Library, Downtown Library, 500 Main Street.
