Welcome to UConn Law! This week was all about getting prepared, but you've made it through orientation and are ready to officially begin law school.

You met the experts to learn about what we do and the resources we offer. You have been briefed on academic preparedness, the justice gap, and the bar's character and fitness requirement. You have heard from current students and alumni about planning for your career. You met faculty in your practice area interest, sat in on sample classes, and learned about academic expectations. You addressed well-being in the law, cultural competence, and ran a scavenger hunt through the library and IT. You packed hygiene kits from Dignity Grows to support Husky Harvest and area organizations that support low-income communities.

Most importantly, you started to get to know your classmates and make the connections that will support you through law school.

We're excited to welcome four new faculty members: Professors Gregory Antill and Melissa Stewart as well as Fellows Maegan Faitsch ’19 and Brianne Felsher!

Gregory Antill will teach Legal Profession. His scholarship applies developments in philosophy and cognitive science to traditional legal questions about mens rea, culpability, causation, and expert testimony.

Melissa Stewart will teach International Human Rights Law and Civil Procedure and holds a joint appointment with the Gladstein Family Human Rights Institute. Her research combines theoretical and practical approaches to international law, with a focus on the rights of stateless people, refugees, migrants, immigrants, and internally displaced people.

Maegan Faitsch ’19 is the William R. Davis Clinical Teaching Fellow in the Asylum and Human Rights Clinic. She has represented immigrants and refugees in Connecticut for six years, and worked in the clinic as a student.

Brianne Felsher is the Stuart F. Smith Fellow. The study the legal history of q***r families and marriages in the United States from the early 1800s through World War I.

Mollie Teal interned at CVS Health this summer:

"My experience as a Legal Intern at CVS Health this summer has been an incredible opportunity to learn about the variety of in-house roles that exist in large corporations. Working for a Fortune 10 company that employs over 300,000 people nationwide has given me the opportunity to expand my understanding of multiple areas of the law; within the same week I observed an employment mediation with the EEOC, researched deposition notice requirements for the tort litigation team, and visited a distribution center to see how decisions from corporate impact the safety and productivity standards for thousands of workers. Working in the Aetna building has also given me a look into what a corporate career can look like here in Hartford. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to interact with attorneys across a multitude of practice areas."

At UConn Law, support starts before the first day of class.

Through our Turbocharge Pre-Orientation program, incoming first-generation law students spent the week getting to know their classmates, building skills for law school, and connecting with faculty, alumni, and legal professionals. They also explored topics ranging from legal reasoning and research to networking and navigating the expectations of law school.

During Day at the Firm, they met practicing attorneys and learned more about the profession.

This summer, Solaiman Chowdhury interned with the Social Equity Council:

"This internship gave me insight into the riveting world of cannabis regulation, and a new perspective upon the industry. I had the opportunity to support the agency in its mission to destigmatize cannabis and empower communities disproportionately impacted by the War on Drugs. Beyond working with the legal team, I worked alongside researchers, entrepreneurs, and stakeholders to make Connecticut's cannabis industry more equitable. From conducting statutory research, to reviewing contracts, to even drafting operational policies, my internship with the Council has given me invaluable experience and a greater understanding of the practice of law.

My time with the Council has shown me the great impact lawyers can create. Whether drafting legislation, implementing regulations, or litigating matters, our work has meaningful consequences. As lawyers, we are entrusted with a great responsibility to serve others and to promote public prosperity. I am eternally grateful for the mentorship I received during my internship, and I hope to pay that I can forward in the near future."

We love window shopping on campus ... but looking at the windows, not through them. Many of our most beautiful windows are either oriel windows or have tracery. Oriel windows are arranged in a bay, protruding from an upper floor, and are meant to allow light to enter from various directions. Tracery is the ornamental stone work separating glass in windows. All of it is gorgeous.

This summer, Beatrix Jordan interned for United States District Judge for the District of Connecticut Alvin W. Thompson.

"Going into the summer, I was most excited to develop my legal research and writing skills. I underestimated just how much developing those skills as an intern for Judge Thompson would deepen my understanding of both federal procedure and the fundamental principles of the law. On the daily, I get to talk through difficult arguments with the law clerks, forcing me to internalize and articulate concepts that only a month ago would have been foreign. I have even gotten the privilege to write an order for a motion to dismiss for lack of subject matter jurisdiction."

Murray Cento is interning with BronxWorks this summer.

"My goals this summer were to improve my research and writing skills along with gaining experience with housing law. BronxWorks has afforded me the opportunity to develop these skills where I have worked on projects ranging from a research memo about non-traditional family succession rights to drafting a reply brief to support a motion to amend our client’s pro se answer.

"The fast-paced nature of housing court in The Bronx has given me the privilege to see tenant defense from a different perspective. My experiences with housing instability have motivated me to advocate for individuals facing similar challenges. BronxWorks and the Right to Counsel program have been deeply rewarding and strengthened my ability to advocate for those in need of legal assistance."
