Coker University Upward Bound Program Opens Opportunities for P*e Dee High School Students

Hartsville, SC — The Coker University Upward Bound Program is now accepting applications for its upcoming summer experience, offering local high school students a unique opportunity to explore college life, career pathways, and educational travel beyond the classroom.

Designed to support first-generation and college-bound students, the program provides academic enrichment, mentorship, and exposure to new environments. This year’s summer experience includes an out-of-state educational trip focused on leadership, STEM exploration, and cultural learning.

Students in the P*e Dee region will have the chance to participate in college visits, hands-on workshops, and guided experiences designed to prepare them for success in higher education.

"Our goal is to open doors for students who may not otherwise have access to these opportunities,” said James Hall, Director of TRIO with the program. “We want students to see what’s possible for their future and give them the tools to get there.”

The program is currently open to eligible rising 9th -12th high school students in Darlington, Dillon and Marion counties. Interested students and families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible.

Congrats Director Hall!

Coker Professional James A. Hall Named to Post and Courier P*e Dee's 2025 “Top 20 Under 40” List

The Post and Courier P*e Dee has revealed its 2025 P*e Dee Top 20 Under 40, recognizing dynamic young professionals making a notable impact in the region. Among this year's distinguished honorees is James A. Hall, a Coker Professional affiliated with the TRIO programs, known for his dedication to mentorship, strategic planning, and community engagement.

Mr. Hall was both nominated and selected for this honor in recognition of his unwavering commitment to empowering first-generation students and fostering meaningful educational opportunities throughout the P*e Dee. Serving as the Director of TRIO programs on campus and a member of the SC TRIO Executive Board, he plays a vital role in supporting students, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds in achieving success in postsecondary education. His efforts include providing academic support, counseling, financial aid guidance, and resources to help students overcome socioeconomic, cultural, and personal barriers to higher education.
His work continues to enhance student persistence and academic achievement while actively building community partnerships and opportunities for growth.

“Every collaboration, every long day is fueled by a deep passion for the students within this community. I am grateful to those who recognize the value in the work I do, no matter how small it may seem to others,” James shared.

The Top 20 Under 40 Reception will take place on November 4, 2025, celebrating the honorees and their collective contributions to the region.
