GRADUATE Update!! Aaron and Alyson!

“We moved to LA in February of 2018 to be a part of the future church gathering of Soma Venice. The official church gatherings started in March of 2020, and we had a total of 2 gatherings before LA’s “safer at home” order. But, like most church gatherings, we have continued to meet as a church online through Zoom gatherings for our Missional Communities and YouTube posts for our Sunday gathering messages.

It’s been a crazy experience getting connected to the culture and communities here in Venice and creating relationships with locals. One way we do this as part of Soma Venice is through Missional Living. We believe that as God’s people our main purpose in life is to show His love and care to this city, especially those around us – such as people we work with. Aaron works for Dollar Shave Club and Alyson works for a local café, Caffe Luxxe. These environments have shown to be great opportunities for showing our coworkers the love and truth of Jesus.

Soma Venice is made up of two Missional Communities, so far, both having a common mission focused on the houseless communities here in Venice. Our MC’s common mission is focused on our houseless friends who reside on the streets around where our MC meets weekly. Before the “safer at home” order, we would have weekly Saturday morning cartoons meetings where several of our MC members would meet at the host house and go invite some houseless folks in for cereal and Saturday morning cartoons. Since the social distancing has come into play, however, (through God’s provision) we’ve collected a sum of money from donors that we use to buy supplies for them that they might not be able to obtain during these times.

Currently, we are doing our best to believe in and share God’s sovereignty during these times and let that over shadow any fear that might creep in. We pray that this will lead to more people placing their hope in God, and that when it’s all over our church gatherings will come back strong, welcoming new faces.”

CCBM Internship Update!

“Hello! My name is Betsy Anderson, I am currently completing my internship at Faith Academy right outside of Manila, Philippines. I am here with my husband who is completing his student teaching. This internship has become very different than I originally planned due to Covid-19. The past seven weeks, my area has been under an “Enhanced Community Quarantine” where only one person in our house is allowed to leave at a time to buy essentials. I have been able to continue some work for Faith Academy via Zoom meetings and Google drive, but life has significantly slowed down. During this time it has been important for us to remain flexible and remember that we are not in control. In this time I have held onto the truth that our God is in control and that through the “endurance and through the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope” (Romans 15:4).”

“After graduation I plan to pursue a career in crisis management with the International Mission Board. With that in mind I will be pursuing with further education or building experience towards that goal.

I have been impressed with CCBM program here at WCU, as it is a fairly unique degree which helps people like me are pursuing careers that are less mainstream and out of the box. It does so by providing learning that integrates business and cross-cultural work in a good customizable format. Which has allowed me to tailor my education to my future goals.”

“I chose Carey because of the CCBM major. I love the opportunity to learn both business and theology under professors that care about my education and future. The instructors at Carey are genuine and helpful. The Cross-Cultural Business Management program has pushed me to high standards of academic and personal success. I feel called to use my degree in the mission world, though I don't really know what that looks like right now.”

Betsy Anderson, a senior Cross Cultural Business Management major, is completing her internship with Faith Academy in the Philippines. The following is a quote from mid-March when she was three weeks into her internship: "I love working in the HR department. I have already been able to create and edit many of policy documents for Faith. Last week I created a new OnBoarding list that incorporates both professional and cultural dynamics and will help new staff to transition into Faith and the Philippines well. I have also written new housing procedures, and have started writing a handbook for all HR procedures. My main goal for the rest of my internship is to finish the HR handbook. This involves talking with several people at Faith and working together to establish what the procedures exactly are."
