The School of Accountancy would like to welcome Dr. Sarfraz Khan to the faculty at Southern Miss!

Sarfraz A. Khan is an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Southern Mississippi. Previously, he taught at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. He earned his Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Texas at San Antonio and his M.B.A. from Illinois State University.

Dr. Khan’s teaching interests include managerial and financial accounting. His research examines the connections between accounting, corporate governance, and societal impact, with a focus on auditing, ESG, executive behavior, and financial reporting. He has published in numerous academic journals, such as Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of International Business Studies, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, Journal of Business Finance and Accounting, and Accounting Horizons. Dr. Khan’s work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, CFO.com, and the Columbia Law School Blog on Corporations and Capital Markets.

We are so excited to have Dr. Khan bring his experience and knowledge to Southern Miss!

On September 10th, 2026, the School of Accountancy hosted Meet the Firms, an annual career fair that brings firms and organizations to campus to allow students to explore internship and career opportunities. This year, we are so thankful to have had approximately 250 total participants, representing 30 organizations and 170 accounting students. Thank you to all of our students who participated in this year’s event!

The USM Beta Alpha Psi Zeta Mu officer group traveled to Baltimore, MD from July 30th to August 1st for the BAP Annual Meeting! The officers had a great weekend of professional workshops, networking, and gaining valuable insights to bring back to our chapter.

Officers Mariya, Lydia, Kate, and Katie presented in the Chapter Operations Topic highlighting our mentor/mentee program in the Chapter Sustainability session. Along with their own presentation, the officers heard from dozens of chapters around the world about how they are continuing to go above and beyond to support their members.

Of course, no trip is complete without a little bit of fun! They also visited Camden Yards to catch the Orioles game against the Phillies - and the Orioles won, of course. Shoutout to the officers and their advisor, Ms. Julia Bradley, for continuing to represent our university around the nation.

This past Saturday, September 19th, Beta Alpha Psi at Southern Miss Zeta Mu welcomed alumni, students, faculty, and staff back to Scianna Hall for our 40th Anniversary Tailgate before the USM vs. UConn game.

We were so happy to see so many alumni and students interacting to celebrate the decades of professional development, service, and friendships from Beta Alpha Psi.

Thank you Southern Miss College of Business & Economic Development for providing the food and the games, and allowing us to partner with you for this tailgate!

Meet Jeevan Karki, the School of Accountancy’s in-house tutor.

Jeevan is a senior double-majoring in Accounting and Applied Economics, originally from Nepal. Outside of tutoring, he enjoys planning his next trip to the mountains and playing sports, especially badminton.

The School of Accountancy is proud to announce that Professor Amber Hatten was selected to attend the American Accounting Association (AAA) Audit Educators Bootcamp this June 2026.

The AAA Audit Educators Bootcamp included a group of university professors representing accounting programs from different colleges and universities and audit practitioners and was hosted by Grant Thornton at its U.S. office headquarters in downtown Chicago, Illinois.

This conference travel was made possible through funding provided by a U.S. Department of Education Strengthening Institutions (SIP) grant. In the Spring 2026 semester, Amber Hatten was selected as 1 of 13 awardees receiving the Advancing Excellence in Teaching Grant from the USM Office of the Provost. The limited number of Advancing Excellence in Teaching grants were awarded through a competitive application process and were designated to support faculty members implementing high-impact practices and expanding their teaching approach.

We are proud of Amber Hatten for her dedication to teaching her students and her intentional and focused efforts in bringing current and relevant information and case materials to her auditing classes, and we appreciate her continued commitment to enhancing the student learning experience. We are excited to see how the work through this bootcamp experience will continue to strengthen the classroom and benefit our students!
