Southern Miss School of Accountancy

Congratulations to Deamy Alvarado, a recent Southern Miss accounting graduate, who received the Judge R.J. Bishop Mississippian Award!

This $8,500 scholarship is awarded to undergraduate seniors who demonstrate determination and resilience in overcoming personal challenges.

Alvarado's academic journey began at Pearl River Community College, where she found her place in accounting before transferring to Southern Miss. As a Golden Eagle, she took advantage of opportunities through the College of Business and Economic Development, becoming involved in honor organizations such as Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma, while also serving as a Cintas Business Student Ambassador.

Alvarado will continue her education at Southern Miss this fall by pursuing a Master of Professional Accountancy degree.

These business students explored Florence and the Tuscan countryside, visiting leather artisans, coffee experts, olive oil producers, and family-run businesses that have been perfecting their craft for generations. There was plenty of free time to enjoy delicious food, explore historic landmarks, and take in some unforgettable views along the way.

They officially wrapped up their study abroad experience after spending the weekend in Rome. Have a safe trip home, world travelers. 🧳 ✈️

Over the last few days, our students have explored Japanese business and innovation through visits to CHOYA, Uchida Yoko, Tokyo Innovation Base, and Navagis. They also learned how to make ramen from scratch and participated in a traditional kintsugi workshop, the centuries-old Japanese art of repairing broken ceramics with gold powder.

One especially meaningful visit was to Kaetsu University, where our students exchanged presentations on their own cultures and experiences with local students. While there, they also presented a plaque of recognition to Kaetsu University professor Hideyuki Takano for the friendship he has cultivated with Southern Miss over many years of his career.

Ciao! 🇮🇹 These business students are living the dream after flying out for Business and Culture in Italy just days after the semester ended. They’ve already explored Milan with a local guide before setting out on business visits to D-House Milano, Intesa Sanpaolo, and San Siro Stadium, the shared home of two legendary professional soccer clubs: AC Milan and Inter Milan.

As you can see, they’ve also already mastered public transportation. We can’t wait to see what’s next!

A few days into Business and Culture in Japan and the group has already checked off kimono experiences, sweets making, and visits to the Imperial Palace, Tokyo Station, and Nissan Headquarters in Yokohama.

And they’re just getting started. Stay tuned! 🇯🇵

Southern Miss alumnus and Muscadine Bloodline singer-songwriter Gary Stanton recently visited campus to share how he turned his passion into a career as an independent artist.

As part of Coffee with an Entrepreneur, a speaker series hosted by The Hatchery at Southern Miss, Stanton spoke with students about building a brand and navigating the music industry.

Bringing alumni like Stanton back to campus gives students a firsthand look at how you can go anywhere and do anything with a Southern Miss education.

The only thing better than being a Southern Miss Business student is being one at the happiest place on earth! 🏰✨🎢

The Scianna Business Leadership Program recently went on a study away trip to Disney World. They spent one day at Magic Kingdom, meeting with cast members, management, and staff to discuss the real-world application of management strategies. Their second day was spent at Epcot, where the students examined ethics, partnerships, and cross-cultural leadership techniques. Students left the trip with a deeper understanding of balancing macro- and micro-level leadership, and they made sure to have fun along the way!
