With recent updates to the Sport Management curriculum, several new courses have been added to both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum. SM 610 Strategic Sport Communication is a new graduate course taught for the first time this spring by Dr. Ali Hubbard that explores the historical and theoretical foundations of sport communication. The class examines personal and organizational communication processes, the role of sport media, support systems within the industry, and the broader sociological aspects that shape communication in sport.

Some student comments included the following. “Learning about how the sports media landscape has changed over time is really interesting, especially as I try to navigate my career in the creative media side of sports,” said Brandon Woronoff. “The class allows me to apply communication strategies from the course content into real-life scenarios in the sports industry,” added Kate Myles.

Southern Miss Sport Management students in the spring 2026 SM 642 Sport Venue and Event Management class recently partnered with The Legacy League on class project. The Legacy League will make its inaugural debut this summer in Jackson, MS. It is a summer league at Smith-Willis Stadium, developing college students on and off the field—led by former pros and built to launch careers across all areas of sports.

Tim Bennett, Commissioner/Player and Business Development, and Dr. Chris Croft, Associate Professor of Sport Management at Southern Miss, who had previously been involved in summer internship programs for students, discussed how the new league and class could unite to benefit both parties. In the league's first year, a lot of initial setup and administrative details were needed.

The students worked in groups, assisting with league office operations, gameday management, and specific city setup throughout the semester. This included providing leadership in a team nickname contest with the mayor, the chamber of commerce, and community fans. The groups helped promote the fan voting for the top three names. After the final names were narrowed down, they worked with their assigned city mayor and chamber of commerce to finalize the selections. Additionally, the student groups coordinated the design of the city team logos, the city-and-nickname connection message, the team mascot, the team colors, the baseball cap logo, and the team song. The groups completed final projects with specific city promotion plans for community relations, fundraising, season ticket campaign, connections with former Atlanta Braves players, and job training. Final group project information was shared with The Legacy League front office staff for consideration of implementing ideas.

The league will feature six area teams, including Clinton Big Wheels, Brandon Reservoir Dogs, Flowood Flyers, New Jack City Ballers, Madison Mockingbirds, and Ridgeland Roosters. Former professional players Marquis Grissom, Bernard Gilkey, Tracy McGrady, Andruw Jones, Brian Jordan, and Jair Jurrjens back the league, along with the son of Lary Aaron, the son of Hank Aaron, and other former MLB players Marvin Freeman, Lou Collier, Edgar Renteria, and International Scout Marco Paddy.

The project was collaborated with Bennett and Croft and had multiple deadlines within the semester-long project. Bennett stated, “As with any worthwhile business initiative, getting started can be the most difficult time. The same holds true for the Legacy League. While Mississippi continues to prove itself to be a baseball state, Professor Croft and his Sport Management team have proven why the University of Southern Mississippi is a baseball school. Their dedication to detail and commitment to success has proven to be the "game changer" in the daunting task of starting not just a team but an entire league. To say we could have done it without them is to say it couldn't have been done.” Croft added, “It was a unique, fun, and challenging project with the students since everything was new, and students had to work on specific deadlines and connect to outside groups. It put the student groups in real-world communication and information creation situations with deadlines. As things developed, and students saw the website and press releases of things they were working on, it further ignited their energy on the next steps of the project.”

Southern Miss Sport Management and Lexia Solutions Collaborate on UpLift Project

The Sport Venue and Event Management class of spring 2026, with Dr. Chris Croft at Southern Miss, recently collaborated with Lexia Solutions on its revolutionary new product, UpLift™. The company’s breakthrough technology underlies a first-of-its-kind, patent-pending device that transforms access for wheelchair users to attend sports, concerts, and other live entertainment events.

Jeff Runnels, Chairman of Lexia Solutions and an alumnus of the University of Southern Mississippi, connected with Croft, a Southern Miss Associate Professor of Sport Management, some years ago to discuss UpLift and connections to athletic facilities. Croft, a former college basketball coach, has worked for twenty years in intercollegiate athletics and now teaches classes in sport facility and event operations. Runnels and Croft stayed in touch, comparing notes on UpLift’s progress and matters of interest to Southern Miss alumni.

Lexia Solutions has two patents issued and a third pending for technology that allows wheelchair users to experience entertainment fully -- in ways others take for granted. This will include providing access to stadium and arena suite seating and enhancing ground-floor access for concerts.

Students in the spring class collaborated with Chairman Runnels and CEO Mike Hassell, reviewing the latest product updates and learning about the company’s background, forecasts, and implementation plans. The students then took the perspective of a potential or actual UpLift customer and worked with peers to develop plans for adoption, implementation, marketing, and corporate sponsorship. From this work, Lexia Solutions hopes to better understand both the “why” and “why not” that customer prospects might be thinking regarding UpLift. The project’s primary objective was to develop plans and strategies for adopting, implementing, and optimizing UpLift’s benefits. The innovation is soon to be launched nationally for ADA assistance in concert floor seating and arena suites.

Runnels stated, “As an alumnus, partnering with students from the University of Southern Mississippi has been a full-circle moment for me. With UpLift, they’ve explored how to make live entertainment more accessible for guests who use wheelchairs. They've gained real-world perspective on industry challenges that have been overlooked and unresolved for decades. We hope they carry their new understanding long into their careers, reshaping what's possible in accessibility for the venues they'll operate.”

Croft added, “This was a fun collaboration project with an alumnus on an innovative sport business product that’s projected to be highly valuable to professional sport and concert venues. Providing optimal seating for individuals with disabilities who will be able to join their friend groups at games and concerts will enhance their fan experience. We are grateful to Jeff and Mike for allowing Southern Miss Sport Management to be part of evaluating their transforming innovation.”
