Congrats to Matthew Ott, Outstanding Graduate Student in Exercise Science for the School of Kinesiology and Nutrition! 🎉👏🦅
Matt is a native of Lindenhurst, Ill., whose work reflects a strong commitment to biomechanics, gait analysis and human performance. As a biomechanics laboratory technician for the School, he supports research through advanced data collection and motion analysis using 3D motion capture, force plates, EMG and dynamometry.
His thesis examines the effects of high-cadence cycling on overground running performance in recreational runners. Matt’s scholarly achievements include publication in a peer-reviewed journal, multiple manuscripts under review, and induction into The University of Southern Mississippi Graduate School Hall of Fame. In addition to his research accomplishments, Matt has contributed as both a teaching assistant in biomechanics and an instructor of record, reflecting his dedication to mentorship, education and the advancement of exercise science.
In 2024, Matt graduated from Southern Miss with his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. He will cross the commencement stage again next month with his master’s degree before preparing to begin his doctorate at the University of South Alabama.
His career aspirations are to continue researching biomechanics and neuromuscular adaptations to exercise, with a particular interest in gait and running across both performance and clinical settings. He hopes to contribute to the advancement of human movement science through research, applied laboratory work and teaching. One day, Matt would like to become a university instructor and mentor students in exercise science, helping them develop a deeper understanding of biomechanics and human movement.
