Sadly for us but jubilantly for her, Petra Lamb will be retiring at the end of the month. ๐ŸŽ‰๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

Petra joined USM in 2000 as the general administrative assistant for Anthropology and Sociology, and became the finance and administration specialist for SSGS after the University's reorganization. An ardent advocate for students and a meticulous coordinator for faculty and staff, she has had a positive influence on so many lives over the last 25 years.

In tribute to these efforts, please share your favorite Petra memory with all who love her. She is the true OG!๐Ÿ’›๐Ÿ–ค

Alles Gute fรผr den Ruhestand!

SMAS is so proud to have been co-awarded the Governor's Award for its work with Pass Road Elementary School on the restoration of the Old Mississippi City Cemetery in Gulfport. Melanie Davis, Teacher of the Gifted and Talented Students, did all of the coordination, but we were pleased to have been able to contribute a bit of time and effort toward the cause in both 2024 and 2025. Plus it was a bunch of fun!

Three Anthropology students gave wonderful presentations at last week's Undergraduate Symposium. They included majors Madelyn Craig (Hard Times and Children: The Relationship Between Childhood Mortality and Sentimentality in Children's Graves) and Aidan Risher (Virtual Hiding Places: Analyzing Anonymous Chatroom Behavior) and minor Grace Curtis (Growing Up Digital: Gen Zโ€™s Perceptions of Parental Oversight of Digital Media). As always, we couldn't be prouder!

Two Anthropology students participated in the USM Graduate Symposium yesterday.
Mira Sleasman presented some of her thesis research in a poster entitled Relative Data Methods for Architectural Artifacts: Preliminary Results from a Civil War Camp of Instruction.
Cameron Troyer also presented a poster, Preliminary Study of Dental Fluctuating Asymmetry and Porotic Hyperostosis in a Colonial Maya Population. Her work looked at the correlation of childhood health indicators.
Way to go!

Yet another successful proposal defense to announce! This morning Mira Sleasman shared his proposed thesis research entitled "Convalescents or Convicts? The Archaeology and Architecture at Camp Watts, A Civil War Camp of Instruction". In his project, Mira will be synthesizing construction material data with geospatial analysis to help us better understand the lives of the soldiers at the installation located in east central Alabama. Way to go, Mira!

This will be no surprise to anyone who has ever met her, but SSGS's Petra Lamb was given the Staff Service Award for 2026 in the College of Arts and Sciences at a reception last Friday! There couldn't be any honor more well deserved, and Petra is going to be hugely missed when she retires in June.

Cameron Troyer this afternoon did an impressive job at her thesis proposal defense. Her research addresses patterns of commingling seen in the Newton Plantation cemetery in order to contribute toward eventual respectful and dignified reburial. Very nice work, Cameron!

This past weekend USM graduate students Cameron Troyer and Karolina Nogues joined by Auburn grad Jett Kasch presented the results of their study on interaction of childhood health conditions at the national meeting of the American Association of Biological Anthropologists in Denver. They looked at patterns of dental asymmetry in relation to anemia, and received much good feedback.
The project will be expanded to include more health conditions, including those seen in adulthood to test the more long term effects of metabolic and nutritional disruptions that occur early in life

Today we had the first proposal defense of 2026. Kate Mackey presented her intended research concerning the impact of menstrual periods on the work of both performance and visual artists. It is an underexplored topic that potentially will bring important insights to many in that arena. Wonderful job, Kate!
