One of the most whimsical items in Haverford’s Quaker & Special Collections is the chemistry notebook of celebrated American artist Maxfield Parrish. Parrish, who attended Haverford before finishing his artistic education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and Drexel University, interspersed elf-like creatures and beautiful hand lettering among his chemical equations.

The notebook is featured in “Between the Lines, Beyond the Bench,” an exhibition at Philadelphia’s Science History Institute that explores the surprises hiding in student lab notebooks from the 1800s and 1900s. Learn more: hav.to/14ea

Just a few blocks away, the National Constitution Center’s “Pennsylvania’s Founding” exhibition includes another treasure from our collections: William Penn’s 1687 printing of the Magna Carta.

Two Haverford faculty members brought their expertise to Philadelphia audiences this week.

Professor of Political Science Steve McGovern spoke with The Philadelphia Inquirer about his 2025 book "Mobilization Politics." McGovern spent five years researching how grassroots organizing reshaped Philadelphia's city government, using Philly as a case study for a national shift toward bottom-up local politics. Shibulal Family Computer Science ProfessorSorelle Friedler joined WHYY's Studio 2 for an episode of its "The Big Fix," a monthly series on solutions to big national problems. In our final episode of Field Notes, we catch up with Nava Mach ‘27, who spent her summer on the research team at the Penn Vet Working Dog Center, part of the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine. Supported by Haverford’s Center for Career and Professional Advising, Mach helped train the center’s bio-detection dogs to identify hemangiosarcoma, an aggressive canine cancer often diagnosed too late. So far, the dogs have learned to tell cancerous blood samples from healthy ones, a sign they might catch the disease before any machine can.

Before tonight's Eagles and Bears take the field for Monday Night Football, here's a throwback from Haverford's own gridiron history.

In 1971, David Parham '72 led the Fords' offense through their final football season, which ended with a win over Swarthmore. Fifty-five years later, he and teammate Art Baruffi '72 came back to campus to donate a ball, his jersey, and the plaque commemorating his receipt of the Maxwell Award College Player of the Week honor.

In 1971, David Parham played in Haverford College's final football season. 55 years later, he brought his jersey back where it belongs.

Swagnita Das ‘28 spent her summer in Philadelphia as an assistant to Artistic Director Teya Sepinuck at Theater of Witness, working with a group of teen girls from the African Family Health Organization to build “GrandWomen,” a production about the elders who’ve shaped their lives and the women they hope to become. Das helped type scripts, run lines, and document rehearsals, but found her role was really about being a steady, supportive presence for a cast spanning generations.

Talking Heads hit Roberts Hall a month after their debut album dropped... and a third of the crowd walked out.

Pavement was scheduled to play Founders Hall. Right before the show, the band's biggest hit, "Cut Your Hair," blew up.

Vampire Weekend played Lunt Basement for $1,000, just a month before the rest of the world caught on.

Turns out our tiny campus has a habit of booking bands right before they make it big.
