Steel Magnolias is a comedy-drama about a close-knit group of Southern women in Louisiana who gather at a local beauty salon to share gossip, laughter, and support through life’s major milestones and tragedies. The title symbolizes the characters: delicate like magnolias yet tough as steel. This play is a heartfelt celebration of the bonds between women, reminding audiences of the power of community and emotional support.

Meet Amy Tee⬇️

More than 20 years ago, Amy signed up for a stand-up comedy class at Northern Essex. Her first time on stage, she says, was the day she knew exactly what she was meant to do with her life. Today she’s a full-time working comic who plays rooms across New England, and this month, she’s back at NECC, teaching the same kind of class that started it all. Full circle! 🔄

Amy has lived in Haverhill her whole life, and she’s also president of the board of directors of the MA National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)— something that she holds very close to her heart. Her comedy is deeply personal. She talks about her mental health and her recovery from substance use, because she’s found that humor can “take the tension off” and teach people through laughter. After nearly every show, someone comes up to share a story about a mother, a brother, or a friend. 💛

Coming to campus this month, NECC Theater presents: Steel Magnolias 💐

Set in a close-knit Louisiana beauty salon, Steel Magnolias follows a circle of Southern women who lean on humor, gossip, and each other through life’s biggest joys and hardest losses. The play’s title captures its heart: characters as delicate as magnolias, yet as resilient as steel.Steel Magnolias poster created by Nicole Dean

The production is directed by National Award-Winning Director and NECC Professor Brianne Beatrice, with student Jay Ouellette serving as assistant director. The cast is led by National Award-winning actor Naima Eve as Truvy, alongside Katherine Caulfield, Rachael Knipe, Tawny Marshall, Gianna Proia, and Laurille Wirling, an Excellence in Performance nominee for her portrayal of Harper in NECC Theater’s Angels in America.

“It’s really poignant, and I think necessary right now in our world, to remember the core value of female camaraderie,” Beatrice said. “Women that lift up other women — that’s really what it’s all about. We all need that reminder that, at the end of the day, we’re here for each other.”

Please park in the TC building parking lot on College Ave; this is to the right as you enter the campus. Meet Karlee, Susan, and Grace in front of NECC’s Tech Center (TC) to start our walk around the Haverhill campus.

🗺️ THE ROUTE
Walk from the Tech Center building to Kenoza Street; take a left and cross the street to Dudley Porter Trail.
Take a left onto Dudley Porter Trail; walk for about 20 minutes
Exit the trail back onto Kenoza Street (should be across from the baseball field/track). Walk through campus (past Opportunity Works building, through sports building/campus quad walkway
The final meeting spot is in front of the Bentley Library (near the Live Your Dreams statue), where we will meet to discuss our reads and enjoy snacks/refreshments.
