Check out what our Center for Corporate & Community Education (CCCE) students have to say about their experiences in their classes⬇️

At NECC, learning feels less like sitting in a classroom and more like joining a community. Whether you're building new career skills, earning a professional certificate, or picking up a hobby just for the joy of it, CCCE courses are designed to meet you where you are and help you grow— at your own pace, in a supportive space.

What does support mean for student success?

When we asked NECC Business Transfer student Engely Geraldino, her response was simple: it means everything.

Three years ago, Engely arrived in the U.S. unfamiliar with the language, the school system, or NECC. Today she’s an Early College graduate, an NECC Fifth Year Scholar, and a community health worker at the Lawrence Family Health Center.

Her advice on getting there? It wasn’t about grades — it was about the mentors who saw her potential before she could see it herself: faculty who built her a custom study plan, a career advisor who told her she “deserved to dream big,” and professors who pushed her to write in her own voice.

“Success is having people grow with you”

Welcome to another installment of Tourist for the Day— a series spotlighting the people and places woven into the Merrimack Valley community that surrounds our campuses.

This installment takes us to the Lawrence History Center, seen through the eyes of an NECC alumna and current LHC board member đź’«

My connection to LHC started back in 2023, as a collections assistant during an internship course while completing my bachelor's degree at UMass Lowell through the MassTransfer Program. During that time, I worked on the scrapbook collection and contributed to the "Somos Latinos" exhibit. In fall 2025, I was invited to join LHC's Board of Directors — a completely unexpected and welcome surprise!

The Lawrence History Center itself has deep roots: founded in 1978 as the "Immigrant City Archives" by Eartha Dengler, a German immigrant who began her work by collecting the stories of women at the local YWCA. Today, the archive holds more than 40,000 photos, 800+ oral histories, and countless records documenting the city's history — all housed at 6 Essex Street, in the former Essex Company yard among its historic buildings.

On this particular afternoon, I explored collection materials focused on NECC's own history in Lawrence, a reminder that every item in the archive, whether a newspaper clipping, an old letter, or a medal, carries a story about our community.

Just down the street from our Lawrence Campus, LHC is a hidden gem worth exploring. Take a look through the carousel to spend the afternoon there with us!

Meet Jonas Tejada — NECC student, SOAR Scholar, and NASPA-certified Peer Educator — whose summer took an unexpected turn! 🌟

It started with a conversation over food at local Lawrence spot, where Jonas happened to run into State Senator Pavel Payano. That chat turned into an internship opportunity, a surprise interview, and a summer spent working side-by-side with interns from Tufts and other top Massachusetts colleges — supporting Senator Payano's team in legislative affairs, communications, and constituent services across the First Essex District.

Jonas met state officials, city representatives, business owners, school principals, and residents throughout the district, and walked away with a deeper appreciation for the work public servants do every day.

His takeaway for other students? "Be prepared to impress. You never know who you might meet, and what opportunities could stem from a random encounter."

We're so proud of Jonas and everything he represents as part of the NECC community!
