The Anthrozoology major explores the unique relationships and bonds between humans and animals. By increasing our knowledge about this bond and by assessing how animals enrich our lives, we can improve the quality of life for both humans and animals. Carroll College's unique experiential approach provides students with both scientific and academic rigor and the hands-on application of the knowledge gained.

📅 UPCOMING WEBINAR | Thursday, October 8, 2026 | 1:00–2:00 PM MDT
(Part of the Animal Assisted Interventions Webinar Series)

Most research on supporting military families focuses on service members alone — but what about the whole family?

Join us for Animal-Assisted Interventions for Military Families: Current Findings and Future Directions, presented by Leanne Nieforth, Ph.D., researcher and HAI scientist whose work spans service dogs for veterans with PTSD, equine-assisted interventions, and family resilience in military populations.

Dr. Nieforth will walk us through what the current evidence tells us about AAI for military families — and where the research needs to go next.

🔹 How AAIs may improve communication, relational bonds, and psychosocial wellbeing in military families
🔹 Why family-focused intervention approaches remain critically understudied
🔹 Directions for future research that includes outcomes for multiple family members

Military families carry a weight that extends far beyond the service member. This session is a timely look at how the human-animal bond may help carry some of that weight.

Today as we remember what our nation went through 25 years ago, our amazing Dr. Marie Suthers remembers what her experience was at ground zero.

“To be honest, I did not know if I was going to come out alive because we didn’t know then,” Dr. Marie Suthers, a Veterinary Medical Assistance Team leader at the site of 9/11, said.

How is this boy still looking for his forever home!? Oreo is a sweet lovable boy. He is a four-year-old black lab mix with a mellow and loving personality. He adores people and children, always greeting them with a wagging tail and pretty brown eyes that win everyone over. Oreo enjoys daily walks in the park, where he can sniff around and explore. Playtime is a favorite for him, especially games of tug-of-war. When the fun is done, Oreo loves nothing more than curling up for a long nap or chewing on his bone. He tore his CCL (human ACL) recently and will be having surgery to have it repaired. But after he heals from that, he will be up for anything!
