Kudos to Hofstra student researchers Renee Lista and Kate Dramer for presenting their work - which was funded by the National Center for Suburban Studies - at Graduate Research Day 2026! 👏
Renee Lista examined food access challenges in Roosevelt, NY -  the poorest community in one of the nation’s richest counties - through surveys, GIS analysis, and a food audit of 18 retail locations. Her project explored healthy food availability, affordability, transportation barriers, and access to culturally important foods. Renee also received an Honorable Mention for the Provost Research Award and will present this work at the 2026 AFHVS/ASFS Conference at the University of Vermont.
Kate Dramer explored how environmental values and consumer perceptions influence sunscreen purchasing decisions among Long Island residents. Through surveys and focus groups, Kate examined attitudes toward sunscreen ingredients, “reef-safe” labeling, and environmental marketing claims.
Together, these projects demonstrate the impact of student-led research in advancing sustainability and public health.

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Nassau County and Hofstra University are conducting a study of home energy use and cost on Long Island as part of the Long Island Regional Clean Energy Hub’s goal to support an equitable transition to a clean energy economy.
