This NSC student organization was founded on August 24, 2015 but wasn't officially recognized by Nevada State College until October 2015. This is the very first student cannabis organization in Nevada History. Initially the organization was met with resistance and opposition on campus, primarily from the student government. Scorpions CAN made legal preparations to protect their rights as students
by reaching out to the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (www.theFIRE.org). Eventually, Scorpions CAN was reluctantly approved for official recognition as a student organization (2015-2016) under the leadership of Deuvall Dorsey [Former NSC student body president]. The purpose of the organization at the time was to raise awareness on & off campus about Nevada Ballot Initiative 2 to legalize recreational adult use marijuana for people 21 years and older. The organization became the catalyst for student cannabis organizations to begin launching state-wide; UNLV Rebels CAN, UNR WolfPack CAN, CSN Coyotes CAN, UNLV SSDP and the Nevada Student Cannabis Coalition. On January 1st 2017 recreational adult use was legalized and on July 1st 2017 the first recreational sales were made in Nevada. Now our mission is to help college students explore professional opportunities in the cannabis industry. We offer tours of licensed cannabis facilities and explore internship opportunities. We want to put our student members in a position to obtain gainful employment using their degree in the cannabis industry after graduation. We believe that nearly every field of study will be applicable to the cannabis industry in the near future. Now we're seeking new Scorpion members to carry the torch and advance efforts on the campus of NSC.
