Doing this exercise with your horse offers many benefits. First, your horse gains muscle and strength in both their top line and core. Holding the leg up in this way causes the horse to put more effort into standing, which uses these muscles. In addition, shifting weight back and forth between the back legs stimulates the joints and surrounding tissue. In time, you may notice a correction in any asymmetries in your horse. Shifting weight causes uneven, underdeveloped muscles. Less asymmetry in your horse will, in turn, lead to less chance of injury, and will help your horse to feel more comfortable when ridden.
