What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

Even with busy schedules and plenty of important work to do, there’s always time for a little seasonal fun! Blanca Cardenas, Coordinator for Career Services and Human Resources Development, and Krysten Buchanan, Department Chair of Academic Foundations & Adult Education, recently took a moment to get into the “spirit” of the season alongside a few of our departmental decorations.

Here at S.O.A.R. Commons, we’re grateful to work alongside such wonderful colleagues who understand that building a supportive workplace means more than just getting the job done. It’s also about sharing a laugh, celebrating the little things, and creating happy memories together!

After all, a little seasonal spirit can go a long way toward lifting everyone’s spirits!

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

CVCC Outreach and Instruction Librarian Anita McRary is often heard saying, “This library runs on sugar!” And honestly, there may be a little truth to that!

Keeping our goodie bag basket stocked and ready for students is an ongoing labor of love, but thankfully, it’s a team effort! We’re grateful for all the helping hands that pitch in to keep the treats coming and the smiles growing.

At CVCC Library, we believe that a little sweetness goes a long way toward making our students feel welcome, supported, and appreciated. After all, happy students, happy library—and maybe a few happy sweet teeth along the way!

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

Just because it’s Fall Break doesn’t mean the work stops! Associate Dean of S.O.A.R. Commons, Dr. Staci Wilson, is taking her leadership skills to the next level with a highly specialized tutorial on the proper way to wear a turkey hat. We take our turkey-hat training very seriously around here! 😂

All joking aside, the work continues, and our S.O.A.R. Commons team remains committed to supporting our students and getting the job done. But we also believe that a little laughter, a healthy dose of creativity, and a willingness to embrace our silly side make the workday even better!

At S.O.A.R. Commons, we know that getting things done and having fun can absolutely go hand in hand!

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

CVCC Outreach and Instruction Librarian Anita McRary wears many hats, including her role as co-faculty advisor for the TTRPG/D&D Club. Earlier this month, she put her gift for being a little long-winded to good use as she helped club members prepare for CommUNITY Day by inflating their oversized D&D die!

Around here, supporting our students sometimes means going above and beyond the call of library duty—and occasionally putting a little extra air into our adventures!

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

A big thank-you to CVCC Library and Student Support Specialist Mason Herman for providing an engaging and informative lesson for Laura Hortal’s Spanish classes centered around our America250 traveling exhibit, “Making Our Voices Heard”!

The exhibit shares the stories of seven remarkable North Carolinians—Gertrude Weil, Henry Owl, Joe Lewis, Abraham Galloway, Ronald Mace, James Hunter, and Willa Player—who petitioned, protested, organized, and raised their voices to expand democracy and promote greater participation in American society.

We are especially grateful for the opportunity to connect these important stories with our students and encourage thoughtful conversations about history, civic engagement, and the many voices that have helped shape our state and our nation.

“Making Our Voices Heard” will be on display in the CVCC Library through November 20. We invite our campus community to stop by, explore the exhibit, and discover the stories of North Carolinians who helped make their voices heard.

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

CVCC President Dr. Garrett Hinshaw simply couldn’t resist a photo op with LaVada the Llamabrarian at today’s CommUNITY Day!

This year’s theme, “Soaring in Service,” celebrated the many resources, relationships, and opportunities that strengthen our campus and our community. We were especially delighted to see LaVada recognized for her own unique contributions to supporting our students—bringing a little extra fun, engagement, and plenty of smiles to campus along the way!

With countless activities, meaningful connections, and thousands of happy photos, today was a wonderful reminder that service can come in many forms—and sometimes, it even comes with a llama.

Thank you, Dr. Hinshaw, for joining in the fun and making LaVada’s day—and ours!

What Librarianship Looks Like Today 🙂

A little RedHawk help goes a long way!

CVCC Work-Study Student Keira Taylor and Appalachian State Intern Jimmy Smallwood were busy assembling goodie bags for this month’s library activity, “Books and Bones,” when Redgie the RedHawk stopped by to lend a wing.

It’s always a fun day in the library, and we’re grateful for the students, interns, and campus friends who help make our space such a welcoming place to learn, connect, and create happy memories. And, of course, Redgie always knows how to add a little extra fun to the mix!

Thanks for stopping by, Redgie! We’ll put you on the goodie-bag assembly team anytime!

Even when we’re busy making sure our students have the support, resources, and encouragement they need to soar, we know the importance of pausing to celebrate one another, too.

At S.O.A.R. Commons, we’re not just coworkers—we’re a team that makes time for laughter, happy memories, and those little moments that help create a warm, welcoming, and supportive workplace.
