Join NKU faculty soprano Kimberly Lazzeri and long-time NKU friend and collaborative artist Stephen Variames for an evening of song.

Barber’s Hermit cycle sets musically the mysterious, mystical, and even humorous comments written on the margins of medieval manuscripts by Irish monks. It is a work that has placed Barber in the art song “hall of fame” and has established him as one of the great composers of the 20th century.

The evening also features a new song cycle by Variames who is a nationally-recognized composer and performer in the sphere of vocal music and opera. Come share in the living tradition of art song as the composer, himself, accompanies the masterfully expressive voice of Kimberly Lazzeri.

NKU Music welcomes conductor John Morris Russell of the Cincinnati Pops as a guest for a new event on campus titled the NKU Orchestra Summit, “One Symphony, Many Voices.” This summit will bring NKU students, area high school musicians, faculty, guest artists, music educators, and community partners together through music-making, mentorship, and shared inquiry. Centered on Dvořák’s New World Symphony, the day explores the many voices that shape America’s sound — and what this music expresses about where we have been, where we are, and where we are going. As this event explores the many musical voices and traditions that have contributed to the American sound, the NKU Chamber Choir (Katie Barton, director) and the Kelly Mackenzie-Thurley Jazz Combo will perform spirituals, folk, jazz, and popular songs that directly connect with Dvořák's beloved symphony.
