Structures and shadows from our current exhibition, Limnologies, by Aly Ogasian and Claudia O’Steen. The projections and sculptures in this show combine to immerse the viewer in an exploration of the geology and weather patterns of Lake Superior. Their site-responsive structures function as observational mechanism, poetically measuring wind, waves, visibility, water level, and temperature. You won’t want to miss this unique visual investigation of our beloved Great Lakes! The exhibition will be open through March 20.

Join us tonight for an artist talk about Aly Ogasian and Claudia O'Steen's work in their show, Limnologies! The talk will begin at 5:30 pm in Cook Auditorium (De Pree Art Center), and afterward there will be a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibition. Admission is free and open to the public.

Ogasian and O’Steen work collaboratively to produce multimedia, research-based installations. Their work incorporates sculpture, digital media, drawing, writing, and photography. Their practice takes a flexible, idea-driven approach, always involving fieldwork and incorporating artifacts and data collected from the landscape itself. The work focuses on their relationship with the changing environment, and uses methodologies borrowed from citizen science to critique traditional notions of exploration and conquest.

They have been awarded collaborative residencies at Marble House, Rabbit Island, Montalvo Arts Center, Maajaam Estonia, The Arctic Circle, and NCCA Saint-Petersburg amongst others, and have exhibited both nationally and internationally. Claudia received a BFA from Watkins College of Arts and an MFA in Digital + Media from Rhode Island School of Design. She resides in South Carolina and is an Associate Professor at Winthrop University. Aly received a BFA from Queen’s University and an MFA in Digital + Media from Rhode Island School of Design. She is based in LA and is an Assistant Professor at Scripps College.

Details from The Spaces We Inhabit

This exhibition, by artist Laura Villarreal and curator Sofía Sánchez Borboa, invites us to see the places we reside in as more than structures but as intimate repositories of memory, heritage, and strength. Laura Villarreal’s site-specific installation, woven from thread, reimagines the gallery’s architecture, filling it with layers of movement, texture, and memories.

If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to stop in before the exhibition closes on February 12!
