The Grand Rapids Police Dept. is currently hiring for a Sponsored Police Recruit position. This does not require any previous education, training or experience in law enforcement. You are hired by the GRPD and they pay your academy tuition as well as pay your hourly wage to attend the police academy. This process is to attend the police academy at Grand Valley State University that starts in late April of 2027.

Yesterday was Day 1 for Recruits Amber Lawrence and Joseph Kwitonda as they begin the 17-week-long program through the GVSU Police Academy. The road ahead is long and challenging, but we have no doubt these two are up for it.

We could not be more proud. We will be watching and cheering every step of the way! 🙌

After 17 weeks of training, the Grand Valley State University Police Academy's summer cadre celebrated their graduation. The academy's 24 recruits, their instructors and their families filled the Louis Armstrong Theatre on August 26.
