✅ Repayment doesn't begin until three months after graduation or exiting school

Great research can increase its impact when people can understand it, so we joined UH Mānoa’s inaugural Graduate Research Outreach Workshop, where 10 graduate students learned to turn complex research into clear, hands-on exhibits, then brought that work to about 60 Waipahu Intermediate students, giving younger learners a direct look at UH research, higher education pathways, and the possibility that they could one day be part of both.

The three-week program brought together a cohort of 10 students to strengthen their ability to communicate research in clear, engaging ways for non-specialist audiences.

Thanks to the efforts of ECE professors Xiaochan Xue and Yao Zheng, NVIDIA has provided the College with four of its exclusive flagship AI GPUs, signaling the industry leader's confidence in UH's ability to advance AI-powered wireless networks, cybersecurity, and smart infrastructure! 👏

This increases the number of NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPUs at UH to six, strengthening our capacity to pursue high-impact research while also giving students access to the tools used at the highest levels of the field.

The team aims to develop practical solutions for future wireless networks while addressing challenges relevant to Hawaiʻi’s transportation, logistics and critical infrastructure sectors.

Hilo boy and retired Army Reserve Brigadier General Edward Y. Hirata graduated from the University of Hawai‘i in 1956 with a degree in civil engineering with honors.

His passionate belief in public service included a term as Director of the State of Hawai‘i, Department of Transportation, a position he considered "the most challenging position an engineer can hold in the State of Hawai‘i."

His generosity led to him playing a leading role in the team effort that established the Arthur N.L. Chiu Endowed Scholarship to support UH engineering students.

"The other challenging position I held was that of Managing Director of the City and County of Honolulu. Although the position is not an engineering position, the training that I received at the College of Engineering was instrumental in giving me the ability and tools to get the jobs done," Hirata said.

General Hirata passed away peacefully on January 12, 2026. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at Nu‘uanu Memorial Park and Mortuary. Private services. East Chapel. Visitation at 10:00. Service at 11:00, with lunch to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the University of Hawai‘i College of Engineering.

Our Assistant Dean Song K Choi never misses an opportunity to present the annual Alvah Scott Elementary School STEM Awards, where 19 students were recognized for their outstanding skills in STEM this year! 👏

Alvah Scott Elementary student services coordinator Brad Kusunoki and his team organize this event to help students build confidence, stay curious, and see engineering as a path open to them.

Applications are now open for PAC-STEP Hawaiʻi 2026, a free summer program hosted by the UH College of Engineering.

Open to students in grades 9–12, PAC-STEP introduces participants to STEM, transportation, urban planning and regional planning through hands-on learning at UH Mānoa.

The program runs July 20–24.

Applications are due Friday, June 19.

Students interested in engineering, transportation, planning or STEM careers are encouraged to apply.

Since 1978, the annual Engineering Alumni Association of the University of Hawaii (EAAUH) Golf Tournament has raised funds to support students with the drive to learn engineering, understand the technology/infrastructure communities rely on, and carry on the work of the veteran engineers who've brought us this far.
