Join Historic Hawaiʻi Foundation and the UH Mānoa Career Center on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, from 2:00-3:30pm at Campus Center Room 308 for a firsthand look at a few of the many paths a career in preservation can take!

Six professionals—spanning different specialties and career stages—will share their stories in a moderated panel, discussing their current work, education and training, and the rewards and challenges of the field. An informal “talk story” session follows, offering a chance to ask questions one-on-one and get a real sense of day-to-day life in preservation careers. Free and open to all students—no registration required. RSVP for reminders. Light refreshments provided.

History Department Receives Three Uehiro Dissertation Fellowships

Hoʻomaikaʻi to History PhD candidates Xinli Zhang, Yeseung Yun, and SeungHyeon Pyo, all of whom received CALL Uehiro Dissertation Fellowships! This highly competitive award supports promising doctoral candidates at the mid-stage of their dissertation in the College of Arts, Languages & Letters.

Xinli’s dissertation title is “The Mongolian Ideal of ‘All Under Heaven’: Building a Multiethnic and Great Unified State in North China, 1100-1400,” and is chaired by Dr. Shana J. Brown.

Yeseung’s dissertation title is “Chosŏn Korea’s Grand Repositioning: Qing China, Ryukyu Kingdom, and the End of the East Asian World Order, 1860-1895,” and is chaired by Dr. Cheehyung Harrison Kim.

SeungHyeon’s dissertation title is “The Science of Language & The Language of Science: Worlding Knowledge and the Forging of Linguistics in Japan,” and is chaired by Dr. Mark McNally.

The History Department was saddened to learn of the passing of Melinda Tria Kerkvliet at the age of 84.

Kerkvliet received her doctorate in history from UH Mānoa and spearheaded Operation Manong (OM), which is now the Office of Multicultural Student Services (OMSS). She was the author of Manila Workers’ Unions, 1900-1950 (New Day Publishers, 1992) and Unbending Cane (UH Press, 2002).

Prof. Monica LaBriola will be hosting another information session for prospective study abroad students! This in-person event will take place on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 11am at Moore Hall 153A. Congratulations to History PhD student Oishi Dhar for her recent presentation at this year’s British Association for South Asian Studies Conference!

Oishi’s presentation, “Steam, Patriotism and Subaltern Mobility: Indigenous Maritime Enterprises and the Politics of Technology in Colonial Bengal,” was well received by audience members.

The conference took place from September 11-13, 2026, in London, United Kingdom.

Congratulations to History doctoral candidate Xinli Zhang, who presented at multiple conferences this summer!

Xinli was a member speaker for the event “New Voices of Chinese Religions,” hosted by the Society of Study for Chinese Religions (SSCR) in conjunction with the European Association for Chinese Studies (EACS). Xinli also presented an individual paper at the Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, Italy. Finally, Xinli virtually presented at this year’s PCB-AHA conference and received a Graduate Student Travel Award.

The History Department is saddened to announce the passing of Professor Emeritus John J. Stephan.

Prof. Stephan taught in the department from 1970 until his retirement in 2001. Educated at Harvard and the University of London, where he received his PhD in 1969, Prof. Stephan taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the History of Japan, Japanese Diplomatic History, and Russia in Asia & the Pacific. One of his most significant contributions to UH Mānoa is his vast research collection—the John J. Stephan Papers—which is now housed at Hamilton Library.

Details about a memorial service for Prof. Stephan will be announced at a later date.

We send our condolences and aloha to his ʻohana and friends during this difficult time.
