Longtime Hawaiʻi insurance leader Jim Cavanah has established the James Cavanah, CPCU, Endowed Insurance Scholarship to support Shidler College students interested in pursuing careers in the insurance industry.

With nearly four decades of experience, Cavanah understands the meaningful opportunities the field offers for growth, service and long-term success. Inspired by the person who once encouraged him to consider insurance, he is now paying that guidance forward for the next generation.

Mahalo to Jim Cavanah for investing in our students and helping them discover a rewarding career path.

We are proud to recognize Shidler College alumni Ross Murakami, BBA ’87, and Dayle Murakami, BBA ’89, for establishing a Direct Admit Program Scholarship supporting students from ʻAiea, Waiākea and Konawaena high schools.

Inspired by their own educational journeys and appreciation for Hawaiʻi’s public schools, the Murakamis are helping local students pursue higher education and achieve their goals. They have also supported Shidler student clubs, recognizing the important role extracurricular involvement played in their professional development.

Mahalo to Ross and Dayle for investing in Hawaiʻi’s next generation of business leaders. 💙

Meet one of our Hoʻoilina Scholars, Sadie Nakao!🎉

Sadie is a Kalani High School graduate whose love of travel helped spark her passion for hospitality. Growing up with family members in the industry also gave her an early look at the impact and opportunities this career path can offer.

Congratulations to Assistant Professor of Finance and Real Estate Yifan Chen on the recent publication of “Firm Location and the Value-Growth Premium” in the Journal of Empirical Finance.

The article, coauthored with Brent Ambrose and Timothy Simin, explores how firm location and local housing market appreciation relate to stock performance and the value-growth premium.

The study finds that the value-growth premium is larger in areas with high historical house price appreciation, offering support for investment-based models that help explain the value premium.

In addition to his research, Yifan continues to serve on the judges panel for the CoStar Impact Awards in the Hawaiʻi market, having also served as a judge in 2024 and 2025.

Congratulations, Yifan, on this publication and continued professional service.
