UNDERGRADUATE DEGREES (BA, BFA)

The Department of Art and Art History offers three undergraduate degree programs. Two Bachelor of Art (BA) degrees with Art History or Studio focus, and a Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degree. This department is the largest in the College of Arts and Humanities with over five hundred majors. GRADUATE DEGREES (MA, MFA)

esearch I university and the Department of Art and Art History is a comprehensive and diverse center for the graduate study of Asian and Pacific arts and the visual arts. It is the only institution in Hawaii that offers the MA in Asian and/or Pacific art history and the MFA in visual arts. Students are encouraged to supplement their programs with courses in Departments and Programs such as Museum Studies, Hawaiian and Pacific Islands Studies, Religion, History and the Performing Arts.

Synergy celebrates the collective power of diverse creative minds, where individual perspectives merge to create something greater than the sum of their parts. This showcase highlights the evolution of ten emerging designers as they unveil bold, thought-provoking, and innovative works. Through a fusion of storytelling, aesthetics, and utility, each designer brings a distinct vision, pushing the boundaries of design.

The Department of Art and Art History is thrilled to present the 2025 Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition. Our annual BFA Exhibition closes out each academic year with new works by the forthcoming graduates from the BFA program. This exhibition features works by 2025 graduating BFA students in graphic design and studio arts 🥳

Ea Mai Ke Kai Mai translates as “rising from within the ocean.” This title points metaphorically at one’s change in perception while earning the degree. Experientially there have been 26 transformative journeys. The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) Degree represents the highest level of achievement in undergraduate visual arts education. These individuals put forth energy and commitment stretching each of them to their limits. The ways in which they navigated this experience are unique to each. This individuality reveals itself in the work presented here. The years preceding this exhibition have been filled with challenge and growth. Those experiences are contained within the works exhibited in these two galleries.

Our students, their families, and friends should be proud of the accomplishments embodied in these works. The entire Faculty and Staff in the Department of Art and Art History are immensely proud of this outstanding group of artists and designers. We feel honored to be part of the transformation each of these students has undergone.

‘O ka ‘āina. ‘O ka moana a me ka lani. Land, Sea, Air brings together artists whose work engages with environmental issues from a feminist perspective, connecting practices rooted in O‘ahu, New York, and Australia.

O‘ahu-based Jodi Endicott gathers plastic waste from the ocean to create life-sized aquatic creatures, which serve as time capsules of human detritus. O‘ahu-based artist, Nanea Lum, uses natural processes and materials, such as earthen pigments and kapa beaten from wauke bark, in a ceremonial fashion to celebrate the ‘āina of Mānoa. New York-based Kathleen Vance’s Traveling Landscapes explore the accessibility of pristine landscapes and the concept of land as a possession. She often engineers a moving water stream within her sculptures. Zoe Wetherall is based in Australia and New York. The bird’s-eye perspective in her aerial photography contrasts the natural environment with the banality of human interventions. These artists are engaged in a conversation about the environment as one earth, connected across thousands of miles.

Please join us for the opening reception of Mud, Myth, and Memory, the Masters of Fine Arts Thesis Exhibition 🤩

Featuring the work of Rosie Connelly, Hala Megahy, and Hiroko Sakurai

Sunday, March 2 from 2:00 - 4:00 PM in the Art Building

Mud, Myth and Memory explores the points in which these three artists meet, converge, and diverge. A theme of the relationship between body, spirit and land weaves through the pieces, speaking to the entanglements that make us human. These ideas are approached through a variety of media and stylistic approaches. Through digitally and physically manipulated photographs, Rosie Connelly explores the imprint of trauma on the land, and melting of the boundaries between the sacred and profane as well as the past and present. Hala Megahy’s sculptural work examines the threshold between self and others, body and spirit, separation and oneness, life and death, evoking creativity at the crux of vulnerability and process. Through the re-use of traditional craft materials, Hiroko Sakurai creates a portal of reflection, bringing forth collective memories and an experience of our interconnectedness with nature. In this time of ecological crisis, each artist reminds us that we are deeply connected to the land and to each other. Congratulations to the Masters of Fine Arts candidates!
