National Higher Education Day: Why Community College Matters at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana

Each year, National Higher Education Day celebrates the value of postsecondary education and the opportunities it creates for students, families, and communities. While four-year universities often receive much of the attention, community colleges play an equally important role in helping students achieve their educational and career goals. In fact, community colleges educate nearly 40% of all undergraduate students in the United States, making them one of the most important entry points to higher education and workforce training in the nation. At the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana (UAHT), students have access to affordable, high-quality University of Arkansas System education that can lead directly to rewarding careers or serve as a pathway to a bachelor’s degree.

For many students, community college is the smartest first step toward a brighter future. UAHT offers a supportive learning environment with smaller class sizes, personalized instruction, and flexible scheduling options. Students can build strong relationships with faculty members who are invested in their success while gaining the knowledge and skills needed to compete in today’s workforce.

Affordability is one of the greatest advantages of attending community college. Rising college costs have become a concern for many families, but UAHT provides an accessible option that allows students to earn a degree or certificate without accumulating significant debt. By completing general education courses at a significantly lower cost, students planning to transfer to a four-year institution can save thousands of dollars while staying close to home. Many, and in some cases, all of these courses can be completed while students are still in high school through concurrent credit or the UAHT collegiate academies.

In addition to transfer opportunities, UAHT offers a wide range of career and technical programs designed to prepare students for in-demand jobs throughout Arkansas and the region. Programs in nursing, welding, cybersecurity, construction technology, industrial maintenance, HVAC, diesel technology, teaching, emergency medical services, and many other fields help students gain workforce-ready skills that employers are actively seeking. These programs provide hands-on learning experiences that prepare graduates to enter the workforce quickly and confidently. Students can also earn many of these technical credentials while still in high school through the UAHT Secondary Career & Technical Education Center.

Scholarship Opportunities Through the Arkansas Future Grant
One of the most significant opportunities available to UAHT students is the Arkansas Future Grant, commonly known as ArFuture. This state-funded program helps remove financial barriers for students pursuing careers in high-demand fields.
Through ArFuture, eligible students can earn more than 25 degrees and certificates at UAHT with tuition and mandatory fees covered. The grant is designed to strengthen Arkansas’s workforce by supporting students enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) programs and other regional high-demand areas of study.

Qualifying programs at UAHT include areas such as:
-Coding
-Computer and Information Science
-Construction Technology
-Cybersecurity
-Diesel Technology
-Electromechanical Technology
-HVAC
-EMT and Paramedic Programs
-Industrial Electricity and Maintenance
-Nursing Programs (CNA, LPN, and RN)
-Teaching Programs
-Welding

The ArFuture Grant is awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Students must complete the FAFSA and meet eligibility requirements established by the Arkansas Division of Higher Education. Fall semester applications are due by July 1.

Beyond ArFuture, UAHT also offers numerous institutional and foundation scholarships to help students further reduce educational expenses and achieve their goals.

Investing in the Future
National Higher Education Day serves as a reminder that higher education comes in many forms, and community colleges remain one of the most effective pathways to personal and professional success. At the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana, students can gain valuable skills, earn credentials that lead to meaningful careers, transfer seamlessly to four-year institutions, and do so at an affordable cost.

Whether a student is a recent high school graduate, a working adult seeking new opportunities, or someone looking to change careers, UAHT provides the education, support, and resources needed to succeed. This National Higher Education Day, we celebrate the life-changing impact of community colleges and the opportunities available right here at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana.

UAHT offers over 50 degree and certificate programs, including an Associate of Arts in General Education degree that is 100% online, allowing students to complete the first two years of a bachelor's degree while balancing work, family, and other commitments. The AA in General Education degree can also be completed through evening classes on the UA Texarkana campus.

UAHT now offers two bachelor's degree programs, K-6 Elementary Education and General Business, through a partnership with the University of Arkansas at Monticello, allowing students to complete four-year degrees right here at home.

Students can also take advantage of UAHT's high-demand career and technical programs that prepare graduates for immediate employment opportunities. Programs are available in areas such as Cybersecurity, Computer Information Science, Nursing, Welding, Diesel Technology, HVAC, Industrial Electricity, Power Technologies, Teaching, Funeral Service, Fiber Optic, EMT and Paramedic, and many more.

The College remains one of the most affordable options for higher education in Arkansas. UAHT offers border county residents from Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana the same affordable in-state tuition rate as Arkansas residents.

Students may qualify for the Arkansas Future Grant (ArFuture), which covers tuition and mandatory fees for eligible students enrolled in qualifying certificate and associate degree programs. More than 25 UAHT programs qualify for ArFuture funding.

Another valuable opportunity for UAHT students is the Arkansas Transfer Achievement Scholarship. This scholarship enables students who graduate from UAHT with an associate degree to transfer to the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville while continuing to pay UAHT's affordable tuition rate. Bowie County residents also qualify for this scholarship opportunity.

Summer classes are a great way to accelerate degree completion, improve scheduling flexibility, and reduce the time needed to earn a credential or degree. "WE Beat Cancer": Terry Harden's Journey Through Diagnosis, Treatment, and the Power of Community

On a quiet May weekend in 2025, Terry Harden received news that would change his life forever. Newly diagnosed with Classic Hodgkin's Lymphoma, his first thoughts weren't about himself; they were about his wife. "My first thoughts were how I am going to tell my wife on Mother's Day weekend," he recalled, "and whether I am going to die."

Those two questions, one tender, one terrifying, capture exactly the kind of man Terry Harden is. Even in the most frightening moment of his life, his instinct was to protect someone he loved.

Classic Hodgkin's Lymphoma is a cancer of the lymphatic system, and for Terry, it had made itself known through swelling in his neck, underarm, and chest. His treatment plan involved chemotherapy infusions, a physically grueling process that brought with it significant weight loss and fatigue. But the emotional weight was its own battle. "The challenge was showing up every day and not getting discouraged when things did not go my way," he said.

Still, there were moments of light in the darkness. After his very first chemotherapy treatment, the swelling in his neck, underarm, and chest went down dramatically. "I knew things were going to be okay," he said. It was the sign he needed.

Keeping his spirits up through the hardest days, Terry leaned on the memory of his late stepfather, a man who faced his own cancer diagnosis without complaint and never used it as an excuse to stop fighting, not even until his final days. That example was a compass. A close friend also offered him words that became a mantra: “You have cancer, but cancer does not have you.”

If the cancer tried to isolate Terry, the people around him refused to let it. His wife and children were his foundation, always reminding him they had his back on the days when treatment left him exhausted. His colleagues at the University of Arkansas Hope-Texarkana greeted him with smiles and encouraging words. His TRiO program family made sure he always had something to eat and a shoulder to lean on. His Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity brothers kept his spirit lifted with steady encouragement.

And then the college did something that moved him deeply: they organized a fundraiser on his behalf. "It was very heartfelt," he said. "I was very appreciative, not just for the monetary donations, but for the support from the college community. I felt loved and appreciated." The fundraiser, he said, confirmed something he had long hoped was true: "I knew my decision to come to work at UAHT was the correct decision."

He is quick to extend that gratitude beyond the college walls. "I love the City of Hope," he said, "and I know Hope loves me back."

Throughout his journey, Terry's faith remained a steady anchor. "I believe that God is a healer and will give you what you need even in difficult situations," he said. He also found purpose in the idea that someone might be watching how he handled his diagnosis and that his perseverance might give another person the strength to face their own trials.

That sense of responsibility to others runs deep in him. His experience has reshaped his priorities in lasting ways. "Health is wealth," he said. "Support everyone, because you never know when you can be in that situation. If you can help someone, help. Never turn your back or turn your eye to anyone's situation."

When the moment finally came when the doctors delivered the news he had fought so hard to hear, Terry described it as a burden being lifted from his shoulders. "A new chance in life," he called it.

He celebrated the way he had survived: surrounded by the people who love him. Family, coworkers, fraternity brothers, friends, and his church family all shared in the joy of a milestone that once felt impossibly far away.

Today, Terry says he makes it a priority to help the people around him smile more because he knows firsthand what it feels like to be in a moment where smiling seems impossible.

When asked what he would say to someone just entering their own cancer battle, he reached for the words of the late ESPN anchor Stuart Scott, delivered during Scott's own courageous fight: “When you die, it does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live. So live. Live! Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight, then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you.”

And for everyone at UAHT who walked alongside him through the fear, the treatments, and the uncertainty, Terry Harden has a message he wants shouted from the rooftops: “WE beat cancer, and I could not have done it without YOU. I love every single one of you. None of this is possible without you.”
