Love seeing our students putting engineering into action! πŸšœπŸ’›

Way to go to our work-study student, Jordyn, for taking full advantage of this incredible internship experience at Husco. There's nothing like getting hands-on with the equipment to see how classroom concepts translate into real-world engineering.

Keep learning, keep exploring, and keep making us proud! πŸ‘

πŸŽ‰ Michigan Tech MAE seniors win 2nd place at national AFRL jet engine competition!

We're incredibly proud of this Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Senior Capstone team, who traveled to Dayton, Ohio last week to compete in the Air Force Research Laboratory's Aerospace Propulsion Outreach Program (APOP) β€” and finished 2nd Overall out of 21 universities.

The task was no small feat: teams were given an off-the-shelf jet engine and challenged to design, build, and integrate a compact heat exchange system that heats cold incoming air using hot compressed air extracted from the engine's compressor β€” all without sacrificing thrust or significantly increasing the engine's size or weight. The modified engines were then tested and scored at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Team members Connor Corry, Ben Herzberger, Max Kleiman, Jackson Reese, Alex Rottier, and Miles Slingsby β€” advised by Dr. Aslihan Vuruskan and Dr. William Endres, with Dr. Kazuya Tajiri as project PI β€” delivered an outstanding performance and represented Michigan Tech with excellence.

This is the kind of hands-on, high-stakes, real-world engineering experience that defines a Michigan Tech education. If you're a high school student curious about aerospace or mechanical engineering, we'd love to show you what's possible here. πŸš€

Team Michigan Tech has been selected as a winner of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Power at Sea Prize DEVELOP Phase, receiving a $75,000 cash award.

The team, based in Michigan Tech’s Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department, includes Abishek Subramanian (PhD student), Zach Hardy (undergraduate student), Dr. Shangyan Zou, Dr. Tania Demonte Gonzales, Dr. Gordon Parker, and Dr. Wayne Weaver.

The Power at Sea Prize challenges teams to develop systems that harness marine energy β€” from waves, tides, and ocean currents β€” to power off-grid ocean-based applications that support the blue economy. Team Michigan Tech first advanced as one of 20 CONCEPT Phase winners in November 2024, earning a $10,000 award. They have now been selected as a DEVELOP Phase winner, with up to 20 teams sharing a prize pool of up to $1.5 million.

The prize is part of the DOE’s American-Made program and was developed in collaboration with NOAA, the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and the U.S. Integrated Ocean Observing System, among other federal partners.

Congratulations, Team Michigan Tech!

Congratulations to Michigan Tech PhD student Anthony Ciletti on an outstanding showing at the Acoustical Society of America's Philadelphia meeting!

Anthony was selected as one of three awardees in the inaugural ASA Student Paper Competition: Seminal Papers in Acoustics, for his presentation on Johnson, Koplik, and Dashen's 1987 paper on the theory of dynamic permeability and tortuosity in fluid-saturated porous media. Seven students from universities across the country presented on foundational acoustics papers, and were evaluated by a panel of judges on historical context, technical content, seminal impact, and communication.

This follows his First Place win in the ASA Best Young Presenter Award at the ASA Honolulu meeting last December, where he was selected from a field of 15 participants for his presentation on anisotropic acoustic characterization of TPMS architected metamaterials via impedance-tube and multiscale modeling.

Anthony is an NSF Graduate Research Fellow pursuing his PhD in Dr. Bhisham Sharma's Mechanical, Acoustics, and Dynamics Lab. Keep up the great work, Anthony!

Formula SAE update: Michigan Tech Formula SAE finished 20th overall in a field of 114 teams -- congratulations, Huskies! Dynamic event day was tough. After setting an impressive time (4th overall) in the acceleration event, the car spun and hit a wall. The driver was unharmed! There was significant damage to the car, however (see photos). The team attacked the problem and got the car back on the track within two hours -- then completed all dynamic events. Grace under pressure!
