Congratulations to the ICC’s Dr. Yu Cai, Associate Dean of the College of Computing, Professor of Applied Computing, on receiving a $2.45 million National Science Foundation (NSF) award!

The project will support the CyberAI SFS program at Vanderbilt University, preparing doctoral students for careers at the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Through research in secure and trustworthy AI, experiential learning, and partnerships with federal agencies and national laboratories, the program will help strengthen the nation’s AI-security workforce.

Congrats to Dr. Cai on this huge contribution to AI, cybersecurity, and computing education!

# Output: The BYTE is available now!

Get the scoop on what’s happening in computing at !

The newest weekly edition of The BYTE has arrived, with student clubs and events, scholarship and research opportunities, and stories written by students for students.

Produced by the Association of Student Computing Interaction and Involvement (ASCII), The BYTE brings student voices, technology, stories, and ideas together. As the ASCII E-Board puts it, every edition exists because of students who “write, design, and share their ideas with the community.”

Take a look and see what your fellow Huskies have to say. Hard copies available in Rehki Lounge, room 218—and in the inboxes of our undergrads, faculty, and staff.

New faces, new milestones, and award-winners to celebrate in the College of Computing.

This fall, we’re welcoming Yunlong Xing, Bassam Abdelghani, and Anwar Walid to our faculty, bringing expertise that stretches from machine learning and sustainability to cybersecurity, AI, and complex intelligent systems.

And the good news keeps computing: Serein Al-Ratrout, Leo Ureel, Brianna Bettin and Keith Vertanen are celebrating promotions, while Victoria Walters, Tim Van Wagner and Tim Havens have earned University honors recognizing excellence in teaching and research.

As Dean Dennis Livesay puts it, their work benefits “our students, our community, and industry throughout the region, state, and nation.”

Help us welcome our newest faculty and congratulate all the Huskies reaching new career milestones 🥳

A mistake from years ago can keep following someone long after sentences have been served and penalties paid, creating barriers to jobs, housing, credit, and education.

computer science PhD student Josh Alele-Beals is harnessing technology to help people find a path forward.

He’s developing user-friendly tools that help people and their legal advisors navigate Michigan’s Clean Slate Law and understand whether old convictions may qualify for expungement. And because legal decisions are far too consequential to leave to an AI chatbot’s best guess, he’s combining AI with rigorous mathematical modeling to make the system’s reasoning verifiable and reproducible.

“The combination of a challenging technical problem and the potential to help people rebuild their lives was something I couldn’t pass up,” Josh says.

His bigger vision goes beyond Clean Slate: using human-centered computing to make complicated laws and public systems easier for the people they serve.

Our local students are doing big things! Please join us in celebrating the Houghton High School CyberHuskies for winning the 2026 Presidential AI Challenge state championship.

Guided by the College of Computing, these talented students created "AmeriQuest," a mobile app designed to help kids lead healthier, more active lives through AI-powered nature quests.

It’s inspiring to see the impact of K-12 STEM initiatives in our neck of the woods. Congrats Samuel, Gabe, Lewis, and Daniel!

The Dave House Fellowship is all about working together. 💛🤖🖤

This new collaboration between Michigan Tech’s College of Computing and Michigan Tech Engineering unites researchers, disciplines, and labs to explore what’s possible in robotics and automation.

PhD student Yaman Aljnadi is the fellowship’s first recipient and will work with mentors combining their expertise in robotics, human-robot interaction, computer engineering, networking, and data science.

And, of course, robot Ecer is part of the team, too!

We can’t wait to see what they discover together.
