MLS Alumni Spotlight: Avery M., MLS ‘25
🦷 Where are you currently completing your practicum/program?
I am in my first year of dental school at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry.
🦷 What is your favorite aspect of your practicum/program?
One of my favorite aspects of dental school is that learning is truly an experience! I love that most of my courses have a laboratory portion where we immediately apply what we learned about dental anatomy, restorative dental procedures, basic clinical skills, and human anatomy.
🦷 Why did you choose a degree or career in Medical Lab Science?
My undergraduate background in Medical Lab Science was an excellent foundation for my professional program. The MLS curriculum exposed me to the science behind health and disease, which provides context to what patients are experiencing physiologically. MLS challenged me to think critically, work with precision, and make careful observations, which are skills I have already applied within the first few weeks of dental school.
🦷 Share something interesting with us about your practicum/program!
Although dentistry may seem like a niche career path, there are so many directions you can take within the field, from specialization and research to public health and education. Laser dentistry, sports dentistry, special care dentistry, and dental esthetics are just a few examples of subtopics I will be able to explore during my time at OSU.
🦷 What is something you think others should know about MLS?
I think others should know that MLS is a valuable degree to have, regardless of which health discipline they might be interested in pursuing.
