MIDN 1/C Danny Hoang, a Texas local, from Richmond attends the University of Houston, majoring in Computer Information Systems (CIS). He has been selected to serve as a Surface Warfare Officer (Nuclear) after graduation and successfully passed his interview!. MIDN Hoang has a family history of service members, growing up around the stories of heroics encouraged him to explore the military.

Rice NROTC has a unique opportunity to commission enlisted Marines through a program called “MECEP” (Marines Enlisted Commissioning Education Program). GySgt Ruvalcaba will be graduating and commissioning into a new Second Lieutenant this coming spring with a degree in Exercise Science from University of Houston. In the Marines his prior MOS was Avionics Technician, working on AH-1Z and UH-1Y helicopters. Each MECEP joins the program for different reasons, GySgt’s reason is he wants to lead Marines on a higher level, guiding and mentoring them to his best ability. Upon graduation and commissioning he plans on competing for an Infantry Officer spot at TBS (The Basic School).
Outside of the ROTC program GySgt has numerous hobbies such as lifting in the gym, running, playing and watching football and baseball. His full time job of being a Dad never feels like work since he enjoys spending time with his wife and kids.

This past weekend the Notre Dame NROTC Leadership Conference was held. Rice NROTC had the privilege to send four Midshipmen, along with MIDN from our PV sister unit, to Indiana. This weekend is an opportunity for MIDN around the country to come together to learn and discuss topics critical to their future leadership. Hearing from retired and active duty personnel, they have learned skills that will help guide them beyond success in their college and military careers.

1/C Friday Spotlight!

MIDN 1/C Matthew Deverell comes to Houston from sunny San Diego, CA. Attending Rice University as a Mechanical Engineering major with a specialization in thermal fluids he has been rightfully selected as a Naval Reactors Engineer. Upon graduation he will report to Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington, DC.
During MIDN Deverell's free time he enjoys reading, video games and playing the piano. His favorite memory in NOTC was traveling to Singapore and Malaysia for his 1/C Summer Cruise. This amazing experience allowed him to see new parts of the world while getting firsthand experience learning about the life of a SWO Nuke on an Aircraft Carrier.

The 2025 Fall Wrap Up:
From new midshipmen to new officers our unit has achieved so many great things this semester.
This semester we took on challenges to improve ourselves mentally, morally and physically. The dedication every member of the Rice NROTC unit brought this semester will follow us into the next. From the Midshipmen to the Staff and MECEPs we thank you for all your expertise, leadership and hard work this semester.

A new series: Midshipman of the Month! Starting for this month, December, we congratulate MIDN 4/C Von Witzleben as our first MIDN of the Month.
He was chosen for his enthusiasm and commitment to the unit. You can rely on him to get something done as soon as you give it out. Again, congratulations MIDN Von Witzleben and keep up the fantastic work.
