After a long career in healthcare and with no previous formal visual arts experience or training, Cynthia Wallace, LVN, embraced her artistic side and ventured into painting, photography, and fiber art.

Eight years later and guided more by intuition than a fixed style, she’s winning awards and an active member of two art leagues, one in Fort Bend County and the other in San Antonio.

Wallace, who is a clinic coordinator in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston, creates work inspired by abstract concepts, expressive faces, animals, and images that resonate with her emotionally. She’s been creating and exhibiting oil and acrylic paintings for the past eight years, photography for four, and fiber arts for a little more than a year.

Having spent much of her career helping people heal, Wallace now channels that same sense of purpose into her art. Each piece is an opportunity to tell a story, spark a memory, and create a connection that lingers long after the viewer walks away.

Two planned World Cup fan marches will impact traffic south of the Texas Medical Center and east of Houston Stadium (NRG/Reliant) on June 23, 2026, from 8 a.m. -11 a.m.
The following streets will be heavily impacted as thousands of Portugal/Uzbekistan fans show their support ahead of Tuesday’s match at Houston Stadium.

Fathers and father figures play an important role in our lives and are always worth celebrating. Thank you all for the ways you inspire, support, and shape our lives. Incoming McGovern Medical School at UTHealth Houston pediatric resident Meagan Samuels, MD, recently honored her father, Joshua Samuels, MD, professor of pediatric nephrology and hypertension, by reflecting on the profound impact he has had on her life—both as a physician and as a dad.

"Throughout my journey to becoming a physician, I've had the unique privilege of watching my dad not only as a father, but as the kind of doctor I hope to become. He is one of the smartest people I know, but what stands out the most is the way he connects with his patients through humor, compassion, and genuine respect. Training at UTHealth Houston alongside him has made this journey especially meaningful, allowing me to learn from his example every day. I may roll my eyes at his dad jokes from time to time (okay, ALL the time), but I could not be more proud to be his daughter and to follow in his footsteps."

We are grateful for the mentors, role models, and caregivers whose guidance extends far beyond the clinic and into the hearts of their families. Thank you for all that you do.

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation reached Texas.

On that day, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free—two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. More than 250,000 people in Texas were affected by this delayed news.

Now observed as both a state and federal holiday, Juneteenth marks a significant moment in U.S. history.
