Rice University is making a bold investment in AI research, infrastructure and innovation—including the recruitment of 75 AI-focused faculty.

Rice Engineering and Computing focuses on both foundational and applied AI in research and teaching as we continue to push boundaries of possibilities across health & well-being and sustainability & resilience.

And at the core of our approach to AI is responsibility: using AI to improve humanity while educating our students to do the same. Our new Program on Technology and Responsibility, in partnership with the School of Humanities and Arts, will keep ethics at the center as we shape the emerging technology landscape.

What if a living pharmacy could produce therapeutics directly inside the body?

Rice bioengineers are making this a reality with a new durable implant set to enter the clinic in 2027. The implantable “living pharmacy” uses engineered protein producers that could one day deliver medicines continuously for months or years from a single procedure.

This research is led by Rice Bioengineering's Omid Veiseh, along with his lab members Cody Fell, Anthony E. Startups built at Rice University are making a global impact.

Rice has launched One Giant Leap Ventures Fund I, an early-stage fund built to invest in the university’s most promising spinouts and alumni-founded startups.

Its first investment is powering Motif Neurotech, a Rice spinout led by Jacob Robinson, as it commercializes a minimally invasive neurostimulator to target treatment resistant depression.

This fund builds on Rice’s longstanding strength in entrepreneurship, including its seven-year run as the nation’s No. 1 graduate entrepreneurship program in The Princeton Review rankings.

The Rice University Statistics department is honored to welcome Dr. Xiao-Li MENG, Whipple V.N. Jones Professor of Statistics at Harvard University, for a talk titled "Privacy, Data Privacy, and Differential Privacy."

Dr. Meng will trace the idea of privacy from a 19th-century legal right to the challenges of today's digital age, examining how Differential Privacy works, why some common assumptions about its protections can break down, and what a broader statistical perspective can offer in an interconnected world.

Today, Rice Engineering and Computing families experienced the school through the eyes of their owls. We enjoyed meeting families at the School of Engineering and Computing reception and the State of the School presentation, led by Dean Luay Nakhleh.

Karen Lozano, Trustee Professor and Materials Science and NanoEngineering and department chair, has been named the Director of the Tapia Center for Empowerment through STEM Education.

She succeeds the center's late founder, Richard A. Tapia, and will build on his legacy of excellence and inclusion. As a first-generation college student, she is deeply committed to opening doors of opportunity to students who may not see themselves in STEM careers.

Lozano's vision is to expand the center’s reach and to help students think critically about how engineering and computing affect their everyday lives. Under her leadership, the Tapia Center will be a stepping stone that enables students to become the future leaders of fields like engineering and computing.

Rice University will host the 2026 Texas Colloquium on Distributed Learning (TL;DR) on October 8–9. Register to join the two-day summit and explore frontiers of agents and systems, with talks on distributed and federated learning, multi-agent systems, and large-scale AI.

Students whose research aligns with the workshop themes can apply for a poster award to present their work and receive complimentary registration. Related topics include systems and infrastructure, optimization advances, privacy, fairness, hardware for on-device distributed learning, theoretical contributions, and applications of distributed learning.

This past weekend, our Associate Dean for Technology and Responsibility, Rodrigo Ferreira, delivered the keynote at the 2026 Paso del Norte International Congress for the Social Sciences, hosted by the Universidad Autónoma de Ciudad Juárez.

Speaking about responsible AI in a global context, Rodrigo offered this perspective:

“There is no single ‘AI future.’ There are always multiple futures based on different histories, cultures, and politics. To speak about AI in a global context is to speak of a world that can fit other worlds.”

Thank you to Tony Payan, Director of the Claudio X. Gonzalez Center for the U.S. and Mexico at the Baker Institute for Public Policy, for co-organizing the event and inviting us to be part of this important conversation.
