At Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, we cultivate the mastery of musical performance, combining a conservatory experience with the educational opportunities of a leading research university. Guided by the belief that talent manifests along unique paths, we limit our student body to 275 uniquely gifted young musicians. We give each music major access to world class teachers—all accomplished artists in their own right—dedicated to cultivating talent and professional success. Our faculty is known for their individualized instruction and for equipping musicians with the skills and experience necessary to develop their own esteemed careers. They have debuted at Carnegie Hall, appeared with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and the Metropolitan Opera, and hold positions in orchestras and chamber music groups around the country and the globe. In just over four decades, we have become a leading international music school, making us both one of the youngest and one of the most prestigious university-level programs in the country. We couldn't be happier seeing our Shepherd School of Music community making a big musical impact! 🎶✨

Here is a round-up highlighting the exciting, collaborative work of our alumni, faculty, and students:

1) Professor of Voice Ana María Martínez is performing at The Met Opera as Despina in “Così fan tutte,” alongside Duke Kim ('18) as Ferrando, with Dean Matthew Loden in attendance to show support 👏

2) The Balourdet Quartet, formed at the Shepherd School, just dropped their new album “Strange Machines,” featuring new commissions by three Shepherd composers: professor Karim Al-Zand, Paul Novak ('20), and Nicky Sohn ('25) 💿

3) Adam Adov, student of Jon Kimura Parker, took home 1st Prize and a $33,000 award at the prestigious 2026 Australian National Piano Award 🥇

4) L’Orchestre National de France presented the world premiere of professor Karim Al-Zand’s “Al Hakawati” under the baton of Music Director Cristian Măcelaru ('06, '08) ✍️

5) Professors Jerry Hou and Jon Kimura Parker collaborated in Taiwan with the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra for a performance of Gershwin’s “Piano Concerto in F” 🎹

6) Ana Spasovska, student of Miguel Harth-Bedoya, was competitively selected to participate in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra Conducting Academy, led by alum Cristian Măcelaru 🪄

7) Lecturer James Palmer ('25) opens his new Houston music series “Point of Departure” on Wed, Oct 14 at MATCH, featuring a stacked lineup of Shepherd talent ☕️

8) Shepherd alumni-founded Houston Music Festival, led by David Dietz ('22) and Chelsea de Souza ('26), has announced its Season 3 theme: Texpressionism 🎵

Over a 10-day residency, Julia shares her wisdom with Shepherd School students. In this snippet from a recent class, Julia guides soprano Lauren Mimouni through a creative visualization to help her voice flow and blossom 🎶

As the 2026/27 Aleko Endowed Artist, Bullock joins pianist Lyndsi Maus and five Shepherd School vocal and instrumental students for a deeply moving evening of song, chamber music, and spoken poetry.

"A Dream Deferred: Langston Hughes in Song"
Inspired by the Met Museum’s controversial 1969 exhibition "Harlem on My Mind," Bullock curated this program to honor Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance.

Before 1991, the Shepherd School of Music operated from basements, attics, and borrowed corners of campus. Practice rooms were scattered across seven buildings, even as far away as halfway to Montrose! But that all changed with the opening of Alice Pratt Brown Hall on Oct 4, 1991.
