There are paths to a doctorate. And then, there's the one CLASS Hispanic Studies Ph.D. candidate Jovi de la Jara ('27) is taking with his own. De la Jara credits a CLASS Summer Research Grant with giving him and his companion canine the chance to journey 5,000 miles as part of his nontraditional dissertation for his Ph.D. in Spanish with a concentration in Creative Writing. CLASS' John P. McGovern Lectureship Series hosted prominent technology and policy researcher Renee DiResta, Ph.D. for an insightful look into Power, Propaganda, and Knowledge Systems: Democratic Integrity for the AI Age. A previous advisor to Congress and the US State Department, DiResta drove a discussion on information authenticity and reliability in a delicate online world.

A piñata and mariachis set a celebratory tone, honoring Arte Público Press' impact on Latino literature. The book publisher housed at CLASS hosted its Celebrate a Legacy of Latino Literature luncheon on Oct. 7. The event culminated with a fireside chat hosted by ABC News' John Quiñones and featuring Nicolás Kanellos, Ph.D., the retiring founder of APP.

CLASS' Hispanic Heritage Month celebration spotlights Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage at Arte Público Press and the vast collections it uncovered. More than 1,500 newspapers have been recovered, restoring what could have been lost U.S. Latino history and legacies. The project's chief archivist explains the importance of what they do to form lessons in the classrooms and even the movie screens.

CLASS celebrates Arte Público Press' efforts to tell U.S. Hispanic stories for the digital age. The publisher's U.S. Latino Digital Humanities Center serves as a venue for scholarship focused on the U.S. Latino written legacy that has been lost, absent, repressed or underrepresented. USLDH has recovered and built digital collections from colonial times through the 1980s. Watch how they do it and how CLASS students support these projects.

Recovering the US Hispanic Literary Heritage

CLASS celebrates Hispanic heritage and the UH Center for Mexican American and Latino/a Studies. Postdoctoral fellow Javier Franco said the center was instrumental in fostering his academic and research success. He brought his findings on lucha libre culture and masculine studies to an international stage. In the video, Dr. Franco explains how CMALS helps future Latino and Latina educators to thrive.
