Racial equity and social justice expert Tim Wise — author of nine books, including "Dispatches from the Race War" — delivered the fifth annual Agosto Lecture Oct. 13 at South Texas Law.

He discussed issues of power, culture, justice, and the path forward as it regards race. Wise called everyone — especially the future lawyers — to be aware of what they can do to make a difference.

"However much pain we will experience fighting for what’s right — and maybe losing — is infinitely less than the pain we will experience if we do not fight for what we believe is right," Wise said. "So, given the choice between the possibility of justice and the guarantee of injustice, I will roll the dice and take a chance on hope.”

Reynaldo “Rey” Anaya Valencia — the first Hispanic president and dean of South Texas Law — had a full schedule of honors and events during Hispanic Heritage Month.

On Oct. 9 he received the Lifetime Achievement - Excellence in Community Service Award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund in recognition of his distinguished career in legal education, public service, and advocacy.

He recently participated on a panel focused on “The Pipeline and the Promise: The Future of Latinos in Higher Education” at the Harvard Law School Latino Alumni Reunion, and he was chosen to present the keynote address in September at the Mexican American Bar Association-Dallas Legacy Gala. Dean Valencia also was involved in Hispanic Heritage events on campus.

South Texas Law's Alumni Association awarded its highest honors to three Houston attorneys during a luncheon last week recognizing their professional achievement, leadership, and service:

- Nicholas J. “Nick” Lanza ’89, Distinguished Alumni Award, managing partner of Lanza Law Firm and member of the South Texas Law board of directors
- The Honorable Christine Weems ’00, Public Service Award, judge of the 281st Civil District Court and director of mock trial at the University of Houston Law Center
- Ryan Cunningham ’17, Young Alumni Award, associate at Troutman Pepper Locke and an adjunct professor at STCL Houston

"This award is so meaningful to me," said Lanza, whose nominators highlighted his professional achievements and also his character and integrity. "I've had a 40-year love affair with South Texas College of Law Houston, and I am grateful for all the things South Texas has done for me. I will always give my time, talent, and treasure to this law school."

Weems noted that she "wears being a South Texas alum like a badge of honor," adding, "South Texas taught me that it is OK to be me — that being me would be enough to be a strong advocate for my clients. STCL Houston gave me my entire life."

Cunningham, who has coached a number of championship advocacy teams for STCL Houston, noted he was accepting his award on behalf of all the alumni who come back and pay it forward. He said he believes that if you're going to do something, you should strive to be the best. "At South Texas, we don't prepare middling swordsmen," he said, referencing the powerhouse advocacy program.

South Texas Law Associate Professor Ryan Nelson was quoted Tuesday in the Washington Post's article "Girl asks Supreme Court to block Wash. state rules allowing trans athletes." He noted that the nation's highest court faces a different issue in this case than those it has reviewed in the past.

“In June, the Supreme Court said states may keep transgender girls off girls’ teams,” Nelson wrote in an email to the newspaper. “This application argues they must.”

In celebration of Constitution Day, South Texas Law partnered with Just The Beginning – A Pipeline Organization to present "Robes in School," an on-campus panel discussion with the Hon. Tonya Jones, Harris County Criminal Court at Law No.15; the Hon. Chris Lopez, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of Texas; and the Hon. Susan Wigenton, U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey. The panel gave law students insight into the personal and professional challenges they faced as students, attorneys, and jurists.

At elementary schools across the city, South Texas Law faculty members participated in the Houston Bar Association’s annual Constitution Day visits to read “Grace Goes to Washington” by Kelly DiPucchio. They educated students on the importance of the Constitution.
