For our second episode of Cougar Collections, coordinator for instruction and curator Julie Grob discusses a special addition to the Rare Books Collections, a 1540 copy of Magna Carta.

The new acquisition, which is a pocket-size printed version of the original scribed Latin charter, was made possible by a generous gift from Howard Holsenbeck, who donated in honor of a longtime benefactor. UH Libraries is the most recent US institution to own a copy, bringing the national total to five.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, and archivists make sure they're not forgotten 📸

For American Archives Month, we're looking back at University of Houston student life of the 1970s. These stories and experiences are preserved in UH Libraries Special Collections, connecting past and present Coogs. 💫We appreciate our archivists for the important work they do to protect, organize, and digitize historical treasures! 💫

Coogs, did you know October 5 is Daily Cougar Day? We’re celebrating the anniversary of the University of Houston’s official student newspaper printing its first issue under that name on October 5, 1934. Long before social media, The Daily Cougar was telling the stories that mattered. The student journalists of the past chronicled campus debates, milestones, and moments of change with curiosity, courage, and a commitment to informing the UH community.

UH Libraries Special Collections preserves decades of Daily Cougar journalism, ensuring this student-produced publication remains accessible for researchers, alumni, current students, and anyone interested in the University’s story. Check out the collection of digitized Daily Cougar issues at UH Libraries Digital Collections.

The Digital Humanities Core invites the University of Houston community to the soft launch of the Black Magazine Publications of the 20th Century website. Dr. Lisa Volpe, curator of photography at Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, and Dr. Linda Garcia Merchant, DHC director, will be in conversation about the timeline and process to produce the initial phase as a proof-of-concept research site, one that cultivates the skillsets of a Computer Information Systems Capstone student development team and a Digital Media lead designer.

This project was done through the Design and Development Internship Program (D&DIP) sponsored by DHC and the Technology Division in the Cullen College of Engineering at the University of Houston.

The event is open to the public and RSVP is required. Light refreshments will be provided.
