Rice University Department of Mathematics Mathematics is the study of structure. It provides a language and tools for interpreting our world.

We are proud of the fact that Math was one of the original departments dating from Rice's first academic year in 1912. Of the 9 faculty listed in the 1912-13 Rice Institute General Announcements, 3 were mathematicians including Edgar Odell Lovett, the Institute's 1st President.

The Wiess School of Natural Sciences at Rice University has launched the Center for Nanoscale Imaging Sciences to improve the capture, analysis and interpretation of images at the nanometer scale. The center will push the frontiers of nanoscale imaging, contributing to breakthroughs in fields such as nanotechnology, materials science, biology and biomedicine.
