Some internships leave a lasting impact. This is one of them.

As we recently welcomed the Rice Global Medical Innovations Program students back to campus after their international summer internships, we're highlighting Angelina Apodaca and her work at the Hospital de Amor in Barretos, Brazil.

Working with the hospital's medical school, Angelina and her team created 3D-printed models that could aid examinations and treatment for a wide range of conditions, from oral cancer to priapism. She also co-taught a class for the prosthetic team on MeshMixer and Bambu Printing, giving the Hospital de Amor new tools to help improve patients' lives for years to come.

Outside of her work in the hospital, Angelina absorbed the rich Brazilian culture, from celebrating Día de São João and the Festa Junina season to visiting São Paulo and trying delicious new cuisine.

Last night, we celebrated two Rice University professors for a rare distinction held by fewer than 35 researchers nationwide.

Rebecca Richards-Kortum and Lydia Kavraki have been elected to all three of the National Academies: Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

In an auditorium of nearly 300 members of the Rice University community, Professors Richards-Kortum and Kavraki shared an inspiring message during a fireside chat: what keeps them curious.

The opportunity to make an impact on humanity. Being part of a team that can make the world a better place. And most importantly: standing for science that matters, and encouraging our students to do the same.

These are values they both demonstrate in their own research: from Richards-Kortum’s medical technologies that reach people and communities who need them most to Kavraki’s work transforming computing and robotics to serve society.

We are proud to have them as part of the Rice Bioengineering community. Congratulations, Professors Richards-Kortum and Kavraki.

One part research, one part carnival. 100% building a community of Rice Bioengineering graduate students.

The 2026 Annual Bioengineering Research Symposium is in the books. For this year's theme, "Carnival of Discovery," we rounded out a day of nine graduate student talks and nearly 130 posters with a carnival-themed happy hour.

Special thanks to the Bioengineering GSA for their work planning the social hour, and congratulations to Melissa Cantú for creating the winning symposium t-shirt design!

Congrats to today's 2026 Annual Bioengineering Research Symposium afternoon presenters!

Calvin Paulsen (Jessica Butts' lab), Emily Henrich (Kevin McHugh's lab), Deeptha Narasimhan (George Lu's lab), Mingming Cao (Gang Bao's lab) and Schuyler Link (Jerzy Szablowski's lab) delivered insightful talks on their research in the afternoon presentation session.

Following the talks, 73 graduate students shared posters during the afternoon poster session, bringing the poster count to nearly 130 for the day.

A Carnival of Discovery: the Annual Rice Bioengineering Research Symposium is under way!

It's a day of celebrating graduate student research as we kick off the new year.

The day began with engaging presentations by Alexandria Carter (Michael King lab), Neha Krishnan (Kelsey Swingle lab), Santiago Lopez (Cynthia Reinhart-King lab) and Selvalakshmi Selvaraj Anand (Isaac Hilton lab).

Tiny peptides. A big step forward for tissue engineering.

Antonios Mikos, along with Rice doctoral student Emily Jiang and researchers from Kyoto University, developed a new strategy for controlling how therapeutic peptides are released from gelatin-based materials. By adjusting the electrical charge, they discovered a powerful way to tune peptide delivery.

Houston has been ranked the nation’s top emerging biopharma cluster by Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News, and Rice University bioengineers are helping to drive the region’s rise.

Rice Bioengineering is a key part of Houston's biotech ecosystem built around academic research, clinical infrastructure, investment and new companies translating scientific discoveries into potential therapies.

Rice Global Medical Innovations: where design and engineering converge.

Rice Global Medical Innovations (GMI) graduate student Evan Law spent his summer at St. James’ Hospital Design Innovation Lab in Dublin, where he worked with a team to improve ultrasound imaging and silicone modeling.

This immersive experience influenced his approach to designing a knee nerve block model: thinking from a designer's perspective, not just from a technical engineering perspective.
