Victor Castleman '28 spends his days turning raw ranchland into sites ready for major energy and data center development. As director of site selection and acquisition at Ocis Intelligent Energy LLC, he leads land acquisition, grid interconnection and permitting for a 500 MW project south of Dallas.

Now, he's adding another challenge: the Rice Professional Evening MBA. He chose the program to strengthen his financial and strategic skills while continuing to lead an active development project.

Rice also brings him back to something he loves: rugby. A former rugby player at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory and Fordham University, he’s joining Rice Rugby and hopes to help guide a young team through the season.

Read more about Victor's path to Rice and what he hopes to build next in our first Meet the Class of 2028 feature.

The Home Depot recently called the housing market "frozen." A big part of the reason is about 20% of U.S. mortgages carry rates below 3% and roughly half sit below 4%. Homeowners holding those loans have little incentive to sell and take on a new mortgage near 6.7%.

David Zhang, assistant professor of finance at Rice Business, told Marketplace that these pressures should ease over time as job changes and other life events pull people back into the market, though relief is difficult to foresee in the year ahead.

Ned Southwell FTMBA '27 came to Rice Business with a clear goal: Take his finance background into the energy industry.

This summer, his internship with Phillips 66 gave him the chance to make that transition real. Working in the U.S. marketing finance department, Ned built a financial model for a potential brand strategy, collaborated with teams across finance, marketing and legal, and presented his recommendation to senior leadership.

Just as valuable were the conversations he had with Rice Business alumni throughout the company. Hearing how they built their own careers at Phillips 66 helped Ned sharpen his vision for what his post-MBA path could look like.
