The University of Houston has launched the Institute for Housing, Homelessness, and Health, an ambitious new university-wide initiative under UH Health that brings together expertise in healthcare, social work, public policy, law, data science and other disciplines to help communities better understand and ultimately end homelessness.

Established through an anonymous $5 million gift, the institute, known as IH3, was officially unveiled at Mayor John Whitmire's Report to City Council at Houston City Hall on Wednesday, August 26. IH3 will work alongside housing providers, healthcare organizations, policymakers and community partners to identify needs and challenges, and turn University research and expertise into practical solutions.

The goal of IH3 will be to equip communities with the evidence, tools and partnerships needed to better understand the root causes of homelessness, uncover gaps across housing, healthcare and other services, help them scale what works, improve what doesn’t. By looking beyond individual programs to the broader system, the institute aims to identify where changes can have the greatest impact.

The University of Houston is carrying strong enrollment momentum into the fall semester, welcoming a record-breaking class of nearly 7,100 freshmen — the first in UH history to top 7,000 — and marking the third consecutive year of record freshman enrollment.

Interest in UH also reached a new high, with nearly 39,000 completed freshman applications, a 12% increase from last year.

Those records reflect broader growth across the University, including an increase in new graduate students, continued strength in transfer enrollment and a growing Honors College.

UH ranks an astounding No. 6 globally in "Public Interest" (trailing only a handful of legacy institutions like Oxford and Brown) and commands a top-tier digital presence, scoring in the 95th to 96th percentiles globally across website traffic, news mentions and social media engagement.

Published by American Caldwell, the GUV rankings measure how effectively universities command public attention through news coverage, public interest, website traffic, social media reach and YouTube viewership.

This surge in visibility is directly driven by the thought leadership of award-winning faculty, the achievements of students and alumni, and the national exposure generated by powerhouse Athletics programs.
