Leaders from across UH Health gathered at the College of Optometry for the Humana Institute Endowed Chairs Leadership Meeting, hosted by the College of Optometry and led by Dr. Lola Adepoju. The meeting provided an opportunity for health science leaders to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration while exploring innovative technologies and approaches advancing eye care. https://bit.ly/4icU443

Representing the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) was Dean Yarneccia D. Dyson, who joined fellow UH Health deans and leaders from across the University. 💜 The Numbers We Can’t Ignore

October marks the beginning of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). Despite available resources and advocacy efforts, around half of all victims still do not report their experiences to authorities. What’s especially concerning is the prevalence of abuse — an average of 24 people per minute are victims of r**e, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States.

As an institution of social work education, the Graduate College of Social Work (GCSW) prioritizes giving students the knowledge, expertise, and tools to advocate and protect survivors and victims of abuse. This October, we plan to continue embodying that spirit on our social channels by sharing stories, statistics, and resources on all of our platforms.

We are thrilled to announce that Assistant Professor Terrell T. Richardson, PhD, M.Ed, MSW, has been selected to join the Advisory Board for the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP). He was previously a MFP PhD fellow in 2026.

In his new role, he will support policies, procedures, and overall program planning. Moreover, he will be charged with promoting and nurturing the success of the Fellowship for incoming cohorts.

PhD student and MSW alumna Elisabeth Adams continues to make her mark in the social work field and at the Graduate College of Social Work. Most recently, she was selected for the Advisory Board for the Council on Social Work Education's (CSWE) Minority Fellowship Program (MFP).

Elisabeth was previously an MFP Master’s Fellow. Now, she’s taking the next step – jumping from Fellow to serving in an Advisory position. Her new role, which is given to only a handful of outstanding social work students, will influence the on-the-job training future cohorts will receive.

Congratulations, Elisabeth! We are continuously inspired by your commitment to the state of social work education.

This , we want to give kudos to Lecturing Faculty Professor Steven Parks, MSW, for representing the Graduate College of Social Work at the 2026 Latino Social Workers Organization Conference in Chicago, Illinois. He presented “Separate Is Never Equal: Disability Rights, Inclusion, and the Fight Against Alternative Pathways” alongside social work researcher Marette Monson.

The presentation focused on identifying the barriers that social work examinees face when taking licensing exams, as well as the resources they need to achieve licensure.

“Our hope is that by supporting and resourcing examinees we can reduce disparities in exam pass rates and reduce state-wide workforce shortages for Social Workers,” he said.

- We were thrilled to welcome Provost Diane Chase to the Graduate College of Social Work earlier this week as part of her annual Provost Tour across the University of Houston campus.

Each year, Provost Chase visits colleges across campus to engage directly with faculty, staff, and students and learn more about the work shaping our university. During her visit to GCSW, faculty and selected student leaders joined Provost Chase and GCSW Dean Yarneccia D. Dyson, Ph.D., for conversations spanning faculty research, student enrollment and engagement, community connections, alumni involvement, and the continued success of our continuing education programs.

Provost Chase also participated in a student-led experiential exercise, creating an opportunity to see firsthand how learning comes to life within the GCSW classroom and beyond.

The Graduate College of Social Work is honored to be a stop on this year’s Provost Tour and grateful for the opportunity to showcase the people, ideas, and partnerships advancing social work education at UH.

The Graduate College of Social Work is saddened by the loss of GCSW alumna Dr. Yolanda Ross, LCSW-S, LCDC, MHA.

A devoted social worker, valued community partner, and cherished friend of the College, Dr. Ross dedicated her life and career to serving others and strengthening the communities around her. Her legacy will live on through the many lives she touched and the lasting impact of her work.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
