During the spring and fall of 2017, The Honors College at the University of Houston, together with a number of other colleges, departments, and cultural institutions in Houston, is or

ganizing a series of events to mark the centennial of the 1917 Russian Revolution. Events will include public lectures, symposia, exhibits, plays, and concerts, and the list continues to grow. The Russian Revolution in 1917 had an enormous impact on subsequent world history. Practically overnight, it transformed the lives of nearly 180 million people, former subjects of the Russian tsar. Within a generation, it had irrevocably affected everything from global politics to aesthetics across Eurasia and beyond. The enduring impact of the Soviet Union on the lives of millions of people around the globe means that our centennial reflections on the history and legacies of 1917 will contribute to a deeper understanding of the world today. Details will be posted on each individual event page. Like and Follow us to get the latest. Monday lecture: Lobachevsky to Luzin: The Trials and Tribulations
of Abstract Mathematics in early 20th Century Russia

In this talk, which is aimed at general audiences, Professor Tomforde will uncover the dramatic and sometimes violent story of paradigm-shattering moments in the history of Russian and Soviet mathematics. From Nikolai Lobachevsky’s introduction of non-Euclidean Geometry, to the groundbreaking creation of new and different types of mathematics such as the Zermelo-Fraenkel axioms, Russian mathematical revolutions often clashed with the
political revolutions – and revolutionaries – of the period.

Come to the lecture to have your mind blown by alternate geometries and to learn about Russia’s world famous influences on this crucial aspect of the modern world.

And come for the pizza.
