On Friday, we celebrated our second-year students as they received their lab coats from their advisors — with proud moments and excitement for the research ahead. The ceremony also honored Graduate School faculty member Rebecca Howell, PhD, as the recipient of the 2026 Paul E. Darlington Mentor Award for GSBS Faculty, recognizing her commitment to mentoring our students.

Later today, our second-year students will receive their lab coats from their advisors, marking an important milestone in their research training. As we look forward to this year’s ceremony, we’re looking back at the celebration and connections that made last year’s event so memorable.

What if lessons from the COVID mRNA vaccines could help scientists develop new ways to fight cancer?

Meet K M Salim (Opu) Andalib, a Cancer Biology PhD student and first-place winner in the Pre-candidacy PhD Elevator Pitch Contest at the UT MD Anderson UTHealth Houston Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Graduate Student Research Day (GSRD). Andalib makes the case for an ambitious idea at the center of his research in the lab of Steven Lin, MD, PhD, and Adam Grippin, MD, PhD: using mRNA vaccine induced immunity to develop a universal cancer vaccine.

Throughout the year, we’ll share more award-winning pitches from GSRD, where students put their science communication skills to the test by explaining complex research for a broad audience in just 90 seconds.
