Searching for the Next Health Literacy AmeriCorps VISTA!

The Health Literacy AmeriCorps VISTA will spend one year working full-time to alleviate poverty in Huntingdon County by increasing health literacy, which refers to people's capacity to obtain, process, and understand basic health information needed to make appropriate health decisions.

The VISTA will gain experience related to community organization, public health, and youth empowerment and develop skills including fundraising, grant writing, research, and volunteer recruitment.

Benefits include a living stipend, housing, and choice between an end-of-service education award or stipend.

The Office of Community Engagement is coordinating a Day of Service on April 14th, which has been declared a Mental Health Day off from classes by the College. Making this a Day of Service invites people to dedicate time on that day to activities that improve mental health and build community.

In a come-from-behind, but nail biting victory, Dean Damschroder is the winner of the Penny War by just a matter of dollars! The friendly competition between Dean Damschroder, Provost Bowen, and President Troha raised over $425 for the Standing Stone CARE team’s Thanksgiving initiative! And I think folks had a little fun with it along the way. Thank you to all who donated and helped make this Thanksgiving a good one for many local families!

Watch as the Dean and several other turkeys detail a day in the life of a turkey!

Who Will Be the Turkey? Right Now It Looks Like Provost Bowen Will "Win" the Penny War! We will be accepting donations until noon tomorrow, which gives you a chance to tip the scales if you'd like to see someone else "win." Please email us at [email protected] if you would like to make a contribution to the Backpack Food Program. As a reminder donations can be in the form of cash, check, or nonperishable food.

Let’s make this a good Thanksgiving for kids and families facing food insecurity in our local community! Help the Standing Stone Elementary CARE Team cover the cost of a turkey for every family by donating to our “Penny War” competition — it’s Dean Damschroder vs Provost Bowen vs President Troha.

We will be collecting monetary and food donations outside of Baker from Friday, November 13th-Tuesday, November 17th during lunch and dinner times. There will be separate collection bins for Dean Damschroder, Provost Bowen, and President Troha and whomever receives the most money will dress up as and act like a turkey in a video that will be shared to social media. We will also have a box for nonperishable food donations, as well as loose change and bills – each nonperishable item will count as a $1 contribution.

Donations can also be sent via campus mail to the Community Engagement Office in Founder’s Hall. Checks can be made out directly to the Standing Stone CARE Team. Students are encouraged to consider using leftover DCB to buy nonperishable food items for donation.

The year 2020 marks the 100-year anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. To honor the 100th Anniversary, the AAUW hosted Wear White Wednesday. As they marched to fight the status quo, suffragists often wore white. We honor their fight and legacy by challenging members of the Juniata community to vote on November 3rd.
