Do you ever wonder what your faculty and staff are up to over the summer when we aren't counting down the days until we get to see students again?

Our Lab Services Coordinator, Amber Edblom, has had an especially busy summer as she and her family welcomed twin boys into their growing family! Along with celebrating two new family members, Amber and her family have been keeping busy tending to their herds of commercial and purebred Angus cattle, Norwegian goats, and small flock of chickens. And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve also been breaking ground on their new farmhouse. It’s certainly been a summer filled with new beginnings, hard work, and plenty of excitement

Faculty member Lily Germano packed a lot of adventure into her summer, spending time with family, friends, and, of course, horses. The summer season began with a trip home to New Hampshire to celebrate her brother's wedding, followed by a conference in Texas with fellow faculty member Morgan, where they both presented research. Lily also enjoyed a trip to California, exploring San Francisco, Wine country, and Alcatraz (don’t worry, she escaped), and attended a concert at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado. She later returned to New England for a family vacation in Scituate, Massachusetts, where her family has treasured the same beachfront cottage for generations. Despite all the travel, Lily still found time for horses, showing her friend’s horse, Cugini, at the Cheshire County Fair in New Hampshire. After a summer full of travel, celebrations, and memorable experiences, she is excited to welcome students back to campus for another great year at UMC! 🐴✈️🌊🎉

Coach Haley Pembroke this summer worked for the Montgomery’s at Monterey Ranch riding, exercising, and caring for AQHA all-around horses while traveling with them to several horse shows in Minnesota and South Dakota. She also spent plenty of time with her own mare and had the opportunity to show her at two AQHA events in the ranch classes, highlighted by earning the Open Horse Highpoint at the May AQHA show in Verndale, MN!
She also served as the Western Pleasure clinician at the MQHA 4-H Bootcamp in June. When Haley wasn’t with horses, she found time for a few adventures, including trips to Nisswa, MN, Lake Minnetonka for the Fourth of July, Omaha, Nebraska for a friend’s bridal shower, Austin, Texas for a weekend, a week back in my home state of Washington on Camano Island and lots of time with her lab, Chet!

Much of faculty member’s, Dr. Morgan Pyles, summer was spent with her kids and family! To start her summer, they went down to the mountains of Wyoming and spent time with family, all with a backdrop of the beautiful Tetons. Even though she feels like she spends more time helping her kids ride now, she was able to spend lots of time riding horses and spent a week at the Polk County Fair doing everything 4-H! Not only was she spending time doing 4-H things, but her vegetable garden was also out of this world this summer and all the hard work paid off because her beets won reserve champion and judges choice award at the fair! In between raising award winning vegetables, raising chickens, and spending time with her family, Morgan was even able to squeeze in a little bit of home renovations on their old farmhouse. 🐔🫜🥇

The University of Minnesota Crookston is looking for new herd members for the 2026-2027 school year!

+ Reining Horses: Finished maneuvers are great, but not a requirement. Will consider other ranch-type horses comfortable with the basics.
+ Hunt Seat Horses: Well-schooled over fences, with a preference for horses capable of jumping in the 2’6” range.
+ Horses are provided with excellent care in a climate-controlled facility with access to daily turnout.

Donation and lease options are available. All horses must be safe and be comfortable with multiple riders. Information and videos can be sent to Haley Pembroke at [email protected].

Our Equine Farm Animal Attendant Renae Wesenberg stays busy taking care of the horses and our facility over the summer, but she was up to other things as well! Her big highlight was a trip to Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. She rode on the Gettysburg Battlefield and witnessed the famous Chincoteague Pony Penning. The Museum of Chincoteague still houses Misty and Stormy (they're taxidermied now 😅). In Baltimore she visited the Inner Harbor and National Aquarium. Her other adventures included camping, attending a fantasy ball, gardening, riding her horse Mack, and judging three county fair 4-H horse shows. She is looking forward to seeing UTOC full of people and activity again 😁
