The College of Education at Sam Houston State University Preparing leaders to impact a diverse and evolving world. We were the first teacher training institute in Texas, and we proudly claim that we used to be normal!

Originally founded by an act of the Texas Legislature in 1879, Sam Houston Normal Institute's mission was "to elevate the standard of education throughout the State, by giving thorough instruction and special training to our present and future teachers". It was the first Normal Institute west of the Mississippi River and has been shaping education in Texas for generations. The Institute became a member of the American Association of Teachers Colleges in 1922. In 1923 the curriculum to prepare teachers for elementary schools was expanded to prepare teachers at all levels in the public schools and Sam Houston Normal Institute became Sam Houston State Teachers College. In 1965 the word "Teachers" was dropped and in 1969 the institution became Sam Houston State University. Today, the College of Education is made up of 4 departments: The School of Teaching & Learning, Library Science, Educational Leadership, and Counselor Education.

The College of Education's annual Bring 'Em Back Kats Conference is set to launch on October 23 at the Maverick Conference Center in Conroe.

Designed to support novice teachers through every new mission, this free professional development event brings together alumni, faculty, and educational partners for a day of learning, collaboration, and connection.

Attendees will have the opportunity to explore new perspectives, strengthen their professional network, and gain practical insights from keynote speaker Dr. Jenny McGown.
