From BMB Drum Majors to Leaders in Music Education!

It was a special Homecoming for the Bearkat Marching Band as we welcomed back two distinguished BMB alumni to conduct the Alma Mater and National Anthem at our September 19 Homecoming game!

Jerriald Dillard, BMB Drum Major ’98:
Jerriald currently serves as Assistant Director of Fine Arts in Humble ISD after 24 years teaching the Oak Ridge High School Band. He earned his bachelor's degree in music education and a Master of Arts in Band Studies from SHSU.

Jennifer Dillard, BMB Drum Major ’99:
Jennifer is President of the Texas Bandmasters Association and Director of Bands at Knox Junior High. She earned her bachelor's degree in music education from SHSU.

We are so proud of the work these two Bearkats are doing to serve students and music education across Texas, and we were thrilled to have them back home with BMB for Homecoming!

Passion. Family. Excellence.

Congratulations to Katelyn Blankenburg on receiving an Academic Community Engagement Mini-Grant to bring heartbeat recording technology to the SHSU Music Therapy Program! 🎶❤️

Heartbeat recordings are a powerful tool in music therapy, used to support connection, reflection, emotional expression, and legacy-centered care. In hospice and end-of-life settings, music therapists can weave a patient's heartbeat into personalized music or recordings that families return to for comfort, remembrance, and a continued sense of closeness long after a loved one is gone.

Thanks to this grant, our students will get to use this technology throughout their coursework and practicum experiences, gaining hands-on training in innovative, evidence-informed clinical practice and deepening what's possible in our program.

Thank you for the heart you have poured into this profession and the lives you have already impacted along the way. We cannot wait to see where your passion, talent, and purpose take you next. The future of music therapy is brighter because of each of you. 🎓💙
