A hometown Bearkat making rodeo history!

Sam Houston State University student and Huntsville native Bradlee Miller has finished the 2026 regular season as the world’s No. 1 ba****ck rider, earning $303,911 to set a new PRCA regular-season earnings record in the event.

Miller’s record-setting season included victories at major rodeos such as Rodeo Austin, the Calgary Stampede and the Utah Days of ’47 Rodeo. He’ll now take the top ranking into the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, with a chance to bring a PRCA World Championship home to Huntsville.

The son of longtime SHSU Rodeo Coach Edward “Bubba” Miller, Bradlee has carried his family’s rodeo legacy into the arena and the classroom. He also embodies the university’s motto, “The measure of a Life is its Service,” giving back through his local church, Branded for Christ Academy and the Castillo Children’s Center.

His historic season is a point of pride for Bearkats everywhere, showcasing the excellence, community and service that define the experience. Read more: https://bit.ly/3TT2Yvg

The SHSU College of Criminal Justice (SHSU-COCJ) has joined Diplomacy Lab, a public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of State that connects academic expertise with real-world foreign policy challenges.

For its inaugural project, graduate students in Laura Iesue’s perspectives in criminology course are partnering with the Diplomatic Security Service in Brazil to examine the relationship between primary schooling and gang activity. Their research will help inform international security efforts while giving students hands-on experience translating criminological research into practical insights for policymakers.

Through the project, students are strengthening their research, communication and teamwork skills while exploring how criminology connects to international policy, diplomacy and national security.

The initiative also creates opportunities for faculty across to contribute their expertise to interdisciplinary projects addressing global challenges.

Find your people. Find your passion. Find your familia. 💃🏽

At Sam Houston State University, student organizations give Bearkats a place to connect over shared interests, discover new passions and build community. For members of Alma Folklórica, that community comes together through a shared love of dance and an appreciation for Hispanic heritage and culture.

The organization is open to all students, regardless of Hispanic heritage or cultural background, offering members opportunities to learn, perform, compete and connect through folklórico dance.

From practices and campus performances to collegiate and professional competitions across the country, Alma Folklórica gives students a chance to celebrate culture, develop their skills and build meaningful connections along the way.

More than just a dance organization, Alma Folklórica has also created a close-knit community where members support one another both on and off the dance floor, bringing a true sense of familia to their Bearkat experience.

Catch the group in action as Alma Folklórica performs during Sam Houston Football’s Oct. 21 game against New Mexico State, helping close out SHSU’s Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
