Yesterday, the 2025 Jurg Ge**er International Research and Mentorship Grant recipients, Dr. Nathan Jones and Dr. Laura Iesue, presented their project, “Social Network Analysis and the Mexican Organized Crime Landscape.”

The presentation was followed by an engaging discussion led by Dr. Yan Zhang and Dr. Jurg Ge**er.

Congratulations to Cooper Francis for completing the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Academy training program!

Cooper earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice from the SHSU College of Criminal Justice while actively enrolled in the Texas DPS Academy. His recent accomplishments were celebrated at a special recognition ceremony, held earlier this week.

This summer, a group of Sam Houston State University criminal justice students embarked on a three-week study abroad program led by criminal justice professor Dr. John Navarro, exploring correctional systems in Texas and Finland.

In Texas, students toured the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Huntsville, Wynne, Estelle and Byrd Units, met with staff and visited the Texas Prison Museum to learn about the state’s correctional history.

In Finland, they stayed at Hotel Katajanokka in Helsinki and Hotel Kakola in Turku, both former correctional facilities, and visited prison museums, universities, government institutions and historic landmarks. Along the way, they met with wardens, professors, docents, forensic psychologists and judges to learn about Finland’s criminal justice system and how it evolved.
